how does a ir diode change to green?

hi, i am wondering how ir gets converted to green laser light? i took apart my broken cheap-o <30mw green laser apart and there is what appears to me to be an extra lens which has a green chunk of something in the middle of it. do these green lasers work by using an ir diode and passing it thru a crystal of some sort which converts ir to green?

Well, of some sort indeed. In fact, there are two crystals, one is a solid state laser deeper in the infrared, the second is a frequency doubler conveting that deeper ir (1064 nm) to green (532 nm).

You should probably google for 'dpss laser' or 'dpssfd laser' to learn the whole story. The process for creating orange/yellow or blue is similar.

so there is actually a crystal inside of the ir diode itself? this means i can not take a regular ir diode and convert it into a green laser using only the lens with the green crystal on it? i googled dpss laser and it didnt really help me much as i dont understand everything it was telling me
 
theoretically, you can, but then there the whole story of alligning the crystals, and the lens, which is why green lasers cost more and are more diffuclt to make. most ppl consider using an olike module to be the best they can do when it comes to quote building a green laser.
 
so theoretically if i take a lens assembly from this old laser which has that crystal stil attached and aligned i should be able to get a green laser beam from an ir diode?

awesome, i sure hope this will work out for me. maybe i can find an assembly to make an orange or green laser somewhere?
 
forget about orange lasers, really i heard the filter getting the orange beam makes the power reduced like 95% or more wich makes impsible to do it by yourslef, cosnidering that an orange beam is less visible than green, you would need a really high diode and really high buidling skills. I've just seen an orange laser and it was on this web (look for "tahts what i call an orange laser" or sthing like that) and it looked so big.
 
A year or so I bought one of the crystal assemblies off of EBay but was never able to get it to work with my ir lasers. Probably would have helped if I built some kind if rig to hold everything so I could work with the alignment.

It is important to use an IR laser diode of 808nm... for example... a 780nm
Laser Diode will not work even if the crystals are correct.

does the crystal differ at higher powered diodes? like if someone took a 5mw crystal and used it on an IR laser pumping out 500mws, would it work?

no the crystals get saturated at a point, keep adding pump power and the crystal will just crack/break/melt
 
oh okay...i do know that most pen lasers and flashlight style greens that are good quality use pump diodes that are rated exponentially higher than what the laser is being run at
