How can I tell....?

A friend of mine has two 200mW green lasers- one is a cheap chinese model (I don't know the brand), and the other is a wickedlasers E3. He has had the chinese one for about 3 months now, and the E3 arrived this week. Now, he is fairly safety conscious (would never point it at anyone, is very aware of reflections, etc.), but does like to shine it around a fair bit indoors, especially when he's a bit drunk. He told me that so long as I don't look at the dot directly for long, it is perfectly safe. So I hadn't worried for the entire time. Now, this week I noticed that my general eyesight has deteriorated a bit, it seems. I mean, i noticed that I am less able to read things far away, and it is often a bit blurry. I don't know if this is just since him using the lasers- it could have been over a much longer period (maybe even years), but I'm only 20, so I am a bit worried. I have been careful to do as he says- trying to keep the dot at the edges of my vision, but it is only today that I came on here and saw that this is apparently not accurate safety advice for such a laser. Is it possible for lasers to cause this type of deterioration of the eyesight? Because as far as I have read on here, it seems that damage would be more distinct, with specific black dots appearing on your field of vision were you to catch a beam from one, in the places where you caught it.

Don´t believe your friend! Looking at the dot is the less dangerous part when messing around indoors! The reflections are the hazardous part!!

First advice, go to the doctor - NOW

Playing drunken with a high powered laser (and >150mW is definitely everything than not harmful) is just reckless. Same with guns.

The FOCALPRICE eye protection is better than nothing, but if you care about your eyes, go for better goggles as from OEM laser, JETLASERS, laser2go.


Hope the doctor is able to repair your eyes and I would teach your friend a lesson..

If drinking was involved, go see a doctor, anything may have happened.
The diffuse reflection on a wall isn't dangerous, if the light goes everywhere then it only gets dangerous when you keep staring at a close distance to the dot. Any direct reflection, even from a window, is dangerous and will cause eye damage. If you're not sure you didn't catch any non-diffuse reflection then go see a doctor to be sure.
But if you're sure you didn't get hit by the laser then maybe you're examining your vision more than usual. Maybe you just need glasses. But if you worry about it, then go see a doctor just for the peace of mind.
