There was also a concept of using multi wavelength lasers and multi layers per disc so as to stack layers of data that could be retrieved with a specific wavelength only.
But none of this has happened and a spinning mechanical deal is a lot of wasted space as chips are following moores law, I just cant see it being able to compete with chip memory, some of which is so tiny that it doesn't hold a charge, it has to be energized to see how the molecule was positioned giving binary storage infinite lifespan.
