Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea! :-)

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Some of these ideas you are all comming up with are simply great!

I know I've not been posting ideas on this thread for a few days (been busy with other things)
But my next step is to do the maths of it.

Rather than 'do it by eye' I'm looking into the maths of setting this up accuratly.
My Physics teacher has lent me a book that explains all the maths behind optics and lasers etc. I'm still ploughing through the integrals and what-not, but hope fully we can start to stick numbers on these fantastic diagrams everyone has produced. Then we're in business!

I'm sure between us, we'll get the best possible design!

Dan :-)

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

When you have read up on it Dan post what you have learnt! I have always been a seat of the pants/ suck it and see/ if it looks right it is right sort of engineer...I only resort to maths when I have to.......

I will do some maths on this latest idea to get the required angle for the cone, at least that is just simple trig...

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

OK, I've managed to find a photo, but it's not very good quality.

It basically explains my idea I stated earlier, but saves 1000's of words!
Ignore the colours, think of each coloured ray as an indivudual SenKat Laser!

Also, if I can thread both lenses somehow, so they can slide along a fixed axis, then I could in effect control the beam diameter, (I think????!!!)

Obviously after you have a nice tight, high powered beam, stick in a focusing lens to get it to a point.
I know having multiple lenses is cancelling one another out, but having at least 2, then you can get (in theory) a narrow collimated high powered beam, which you can then focus if you want for burning.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Yeah, I think optics might be a whole lot easier if it doesn't have to get too complex or expensive. As discussed a while back in this thread, we're re-inventing the wheel here... or maybe it's a different model wagon?

Meanwhile, I came up with this mechanical method, in the iris vein (perhaps bloodshot at this hour) This is conceptual only of course... I'm not an engineer ya know, I'm just paid to converse with trees and bulldozers and computers and chainsaw monkeys and the like...

Rog8811, I'd sure like to know how you make your drawings! This took me far too long in Paintshop:

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

That would certainly work Danq, if i had a cnc mill it would be no problem to build :).

I do my drawings in mgi photsuite, I guess I have used it for around 10 years so i find it quicker than any other way.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Hey Rog!

Well....
I do have a CNC milling machine!
I bought it about 1.5 years ago 2nd hand from a school that was selling them off and replacing them.
http://www.desktopcnc.com/out_of_prod/old_roland.htm
It's a PNC-3000, 3rd image down, is my actual machine. (They didn't have a photo, so I emailed them one!)

Basically, you can send me any design exported as a .stl file, and I'll machine it for you!

I assume you're in the UK, so postage won't be a problem when royal mail sort themselves out! ::)

Does this open up the scope of design a bit? ;D
It's accurate ±0.01 mm, so we can get a really good tollerance on parts for the assembly, even really comlicated ones.

Let me know if you're interested!

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Hey - I'm Dan!

ok... hope this is regarded as brainstorm material, rather than brainfart :P (can I say that?)

so more to your point ;)

a way to attach the indiv tubes together, add lots of radial stability, and provide springiness: how 'bout a spring steel strap connected longitudinally on each laser tube, and all tied together at the front or back depending on what direction you need the action. That might obviate the need for machining grooves in your nice cone trigger?

And if the trigger adjustment slid across the spring leaves (mount 'em on the inner side), it wouldn't be rubbing on the laser cases (but you'd lose the ability to have that fat chunk of metal be a big heat-sink)

8-) good groovy! brain conductance! - those springs already exist, hinged on one end - check out what may hold your car's air cleaner cover on. You'd need 'em mounted/hinged a bit tighter though. yep... mount 'em on the inside, and tight, and put yer trigger right down the middle there ::) I'm not drawing a picture of that one.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Alright! The top idea (beginning of this page) is such a great idea! Once I dreamt of hooking up 7 of those 100W-IR-diodes that way, connected in series to a 12V car battery in the backpack ;) but I dropped the idea thinking it eon't work.

Now if these diodes/modules would finnaly arrive so I could start the "focusin'/burnin' biznezz"...hurry up, mail people and DX people!

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

I have just hit overload :o......so many ideas (all of them show promise)......I can't keep up ;)

It's a PNC-3000, 3rd image down, is my actual machine.
Droooool.......... My mill is a bit larger and all manual....before lasers came along I was thinking of CNC'ing it......ah well :D

I have a couple of free days coming up, I think I will use them for a simple proto build to see where I get to, I will post the results.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Cool!

I'll wait to hear from you. If I get a bit of free time (that all heavily hinges around the IF) I'll knock up some CAD drawings of an idea for holding the modules and optics in a maglite.

I think it's fantastic how we've got so many ideas and radically different approaches for the same project! :)

The practical "brakes" are on for me at the moment, as I'm waiting on some parts from SenKat.

3 more posts until my "Class 2" sticker! (I think) - Whooo!

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Just mount the Aixiz modules in a circle, on a flexible disk, and pull back the center of the disk. I was going to draw this, but my software doesn't want to open.

Make a thin spring steel disk and cut slits inward to divide it into 'petals', one for each diode. Bolt an Aixiz module in the center of each one, perhaps with a thru-hole peltier on the other side of the disk behind each module.

Add a shaft attached to the center of the disk with wide washers, such that the petals extend out from the washer and the steel does not bend at its weakest point in the center, but rather a few mm out.

Run this shaft to your pistol grip, such that squeezing the bottom of the grip pulls the shaft towards you and deforms the disk inward.

the petals' big ends should rest on a pipe end so they are loose, but cannot move backward. A second disk should probably be mounted behind all this, with an OD the size of the pipe's ID, to keep things concentric. If the apparatus gets off center, some petals weill bend more than others.

Any differences in flexibility can probably be trimmed with a needle file to arrive at a nice focused pattrn on the target.

I'll try to produce a diagram in the next couple days. -o.r.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

@ O R, I like that, the old saying "there's more than one way of skining a cat" certainly rings true:). You would need to give some thought tp presetting the modules to converge at a distance to start with.

Re: Hex DIY Red Laser - The ULTIMATE burner idea!

Ok MK2 version, if you look at the first pici you will see one of the LD's is pointing toward the camera....Out of the 10 modules 3 have a really crooked output. I will change that one out when I have time to get back to the job.....

at the moment there are no springs or preset screws, this is as is..... note wall eyed one to the left :)
