Because people in general these days are stupid? For most of human history, stupidity was fatal. It's only in recent history that society has advanced to the point where acting like a moron generally won't get you killed, and these are some of the results of that.

No one was harmed, an idiot is all but eliminated from the gene pool by prison time and a felony conviction, I don't see the problem here. I admit the law is really stupid and should be changed, but at least this time the outcome is ok

The bad thing is people will stereotype people with lasers as stupid people with no basic sense, which as you can see from most of the members of this forum isn't true.
It's kinda like the hoody thing in Britain, just cus a few kids in hoodies cause some trouble, most people who wear them just cus they're warm get stereotyped into a trouble maker.
