Ved - How will you concentrate that power from two
flash tubes with an arc length of ~100 mm into an
8 mm long yag rod, part of which is for mounting?

That's going to be one inefficient Nd:YAG laser...

8mm would be far better suited to LD pumping. Either transverse pump or end pump depending on the coatings.
