Yes of course, the 15-20 miles range is just an estimate. If a 50mW 532nm laser were to be used under *perfect* conditions it most likely would reach 25 miles, if not more!

I made a goal for myself that started Feb 3rd that I would only post if I knew exactly what I was talking about. I decided it was time that quality is better than quantity in my posts and so far I have been doing alright! I will/have been trying my best to keep it up

By laser itself, practically it goes very long way, until it loses energy gradually but visibility is usually ten mile as lower atmosphere has enough junks or water vapor to allow the laser to be seen. It would look like it's cut off but it's not - you may be surprised when you light up a portion of the cloud with it (just don't point at the planes). I have done that with my green diode laser, I was surprised (it has surprisingly low divergence).

Thats because the human eye no longer has any reference to the distance and beam after a certain point, so the beam goes way longer then you can ever imagine, even those cheap 5mw only... thats the mistake people or most do that point those in the sky and even hit pilots without knowing how much damage they can cause.
