Hello, I am quite new to this forum and lasers in general, but I would like to build a laser, preferably one that has a visible beam in the dark and could maybe light a match or two! I have a general idea of what parts I need, but I have no idea where to start looking or what specific parts to look for. If anyone has a parts list they'd recommend or some links to diodes, drivers, etc, that'd be greatly appreciated. 😃 Also, what is the general wattage I would need from a red, green or blue laser that would make the beam visible in the dark and able to burn.
Thanks!

Hey men, the most basic drivers for laser diodes are based on LM317 if your diode consumes less than 1.5A (this is the best one to begin with, it's cheap), if you're laser diode consumes between 1.5A and 5A is better to use the LM338, using a simple resistor you can drive the diode (this elements are current drive, they are not drive by voltage).

There are two books that I like for lasers:

- Understanding lasers, an entry-level guide (Jeff Hecht), for lasers understanding characteristics.
- GTZ, for basic electronics.

I remember that on Elecktor magazine there was an entery articule, "DIY laser diode", that was the first laser driver that I made, if anyone knows what was the time of that articule I would appreciate the information.

Hope this info is useful, have a nice day.

Hi,
Ok here is a great diode for you the PLTB450B in a 12mm module with a driver set to the appropriated Amp's. get the G2 lens for full power . You will need safety glasses for aSurvival lasers there about 46.00 and they are great not like cheap Chinese garbage.

2.5V-6V 2A+ Input
$67

Also you will need a host prewired to slide in the 12mm module after you solder the two wires and add heat shrink tubing to prevent shorts.
DTR is a main stay here at LPF and most members here order from him. His credible rating is 100% .
This would be an amazing first build with a time proven diode.
Be safe always....
Rich:)
