Well first of all what a great way to get started here. Having quite a few questions that will probably make you all think I'm a complete dumb ass. I have tried to find some answers but I cant seem to get what I'm looking for. So here I go....

What exactly do I need to build a hand held laser pointer?
A diode, heatsink, module, driver, and housing. Anything else?

I was thinking of starting off with buying a 445nm diode from daguin
http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/445nm-diodes-stock-xj-a140-52076.html

a basic combo kit from jayrob
http://laserpointerforums.com/f64/fs-mxdl-host-heatsink-combo-4171-3405-a-22512.html

then a driver from this website
http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_diode/Micro_BoostDrive.php

my last question.
with the 445nm diode from daguin what should i set as the current on the driver?

Any help would be great so I can get started and build my first laser pointer and for everyone that helps I thank you.:thanks:

Once I build it I will be sure to take some pictures and post them. That is... if it works.

I have a question do You have Laser safety glasses? You can order a HOT option from Jay, and He will set the current for You. You would only have to solder the diode on. Drop Jay a message and He will hook You up.

Of course I do I've had them for a while as I've just been waiting to build a laser.
and cool i'll probably end up getting the HOT option soon and thanks for the help.

^He didn't because he clearly has done some reading and didn't just ask, "What laser should I build?". We tried to help you Toaster but you wouldn't listen and that last post would be trolling wouldn't it?

To be honest vivalabam24 I would start with a lesser power diode and work up to the 445s. I know you can turn them down low but low is still 2-300mW. You'll also miss out on the high power reds that will only go up to 2-300mW! :D It kind of spoils the fun a little I think.

We don't know your skill or experience level of course but you will risk less dealing with cheaper diodes too. By all means get a 445, but do some practice runs before jumping to that.

Check the links in my sig for other useful links and info.

Don't forget to introduce yourself in the, "Welcome", section and tell us a little about you.

Good luck,

M
