Help 500mw Green Laser Dim Red Light

I haven't been a member long but I've seen another post like this and its a little creepy, especially if the person is inexperienced and continues to use the laser without goggles...

@LivinLoud, Actually it's probably safer than it was previously, because the IR was always there, only now you can see it.

If a DPSS laser is working correctly you should get very little IR actually being output. Even if you are getting IR output with the 532 (or whatever color) the IR should still be a fraction of the total output.

I would always assume worse case to be safe. Assume a much higher output of 808nm IR is being output now. Remember since our eyes don't see 808nm very well, that dim little red dot could be putting out over 1 watt of power. Enough to cause near instant damage to the eyes.

Kartracer00, Just out of curiosity.. where did you order your 473nm laser?

I don't quite understand, why would the IR jump up in power once the green stopped lasing? It seems like the amount of IR should stay constant, or at least go down to me. The KTP is probably the thing that is out of place; It seems most of the light that should be going out of the aperture is actually being reflected by the KTP somewhere else inside the host? Indeed, if the KTP fell out somehow, the amount of IR would jump up because the KTP isn't there to block some of the it. But it seems more likely for the crystal to be shifted, i.e the light being reflected elsewhere, and not out of the aperture.
I'm making my conclusions solely on this http://laserpointerforums.com/attac...-lasers-work-newbs-greenlasertutorial_001.jpg
I'd be happy to know I'm wrong, I just need to be proven wrong 100%
Do you think it's the collimating lens instead?

I think the amount of IR may increase because if the crystal is shifted then it may convert less of the IR into 532nm green. So the portion of IR out of the total input would increase.
For example, if it really is 500mW then lets say before it shifted it was 450mW of 532nm and 50mW of IR, after it shifted it may not be converting any IR to green so it could be 500mW or IR and 0mW of 532nm green. Or... when it shifted it may still be converting just as much IR to green but the Green is being reflected in the host so it would emit 50mW IR and the 450mW of 532nm is emitted inside the host.

Yeah the IR will be more powerful because its not converting to green. This is pretty dangerous and telling him its safer now and the IR isn't very powerful and even to look down the end to see the green (wtf!) Is very misleading and dangerous info. Also if this was a real 500mw green the pump would be at least 2W 808. the conversion isn't very efficient.

I can assure you the green isn't just bouncing somewhere else in the host. It did just go away. The crystal don't automatically make green light when a laser hits them. Alignment has to be spot on here. If its knocked out no more green will be produced, only powerful ir will escape out the end now. Saying to look down the end is absolutely the worst advice you could give! Its the number one thing not to do if your green stops working.

Also in any cheap china green the two crystals are bonded together and in a small brass heatsink. The whole thing would come off not just the ktp. Certainly wouldn't redirect the green even if only the ktp came loose, it has to be aligned to produce green.

I cant stress this enough, dont ever look down the end!

I did not tell him to look down the end to see green. I said if you looked at the crystal, i.e from above, like I said TOP VIEW, you could see green in there. If you looked down the aperture you could only see a future of blindness ;) I also did not say IR isn't very powerful. Please read through my posts more carefully. But if you're right, you couldn't see any green between the crystals; you could only see green if it was working. Which is why I'm still hesitant to believe this is the whole story. I will agree with the fact that it makes more sense that there would be more IR, given this information.
