Hello World!

Jan 17, 2011
Hello LPF!

I see that it's customary to introduce yourself at LPF, so I'll go ahead and do that!

My name is Ben and I am a student at ASU studying accounting. I enjoy science very much and I've taken an interest in lasers because I've always been fascinated with the science behind them. For some reason, being able to shoot a very strong beam of light and 808 IR lasers being able to burn things without technically being able to be seen by the eye strikes me as amazing.

Though I am a complete newbie at lasers, I'm not so new to safety. I've had the phrase "safety first" drilled into me from participating several years in FIRST robotics in high school and having taken many science courses in both high school and university. I'm actually very pleasantly surprised at how well the forum stresses safety, but at the same time saddened to see how many people completely disregard these warnings.

I've also taken a bit of an interest in custom building a handheld laser - though from the looks of it, I have a long way to go before being able to put together one from scratch. Maybe I'll pick up a DIY somewhere and learn from that. I've read that heat is an issue and heatsinks are big (like they are in computers), and I look at this which is sitting around and can't help but think to myself if I could use it to cool a laser:

Each tile you see is 18", the unit is 23.5" tall.

I've taken a liking to Blu-Ray, 445, and 532 lasers right now, and decided to get a Super Green Beast #100 and 5mW "403 nm" laser from IQS on eBay after seeing all the raging reviews. I also picked up some Tenergy CR123A rechargeable batteries from battery junction for the Super Green Beast and hopefully future lasers. I hope to be able to pick up a stronger laser sometime in the future more suitable for burning because come on - who doesn't want to burn things with lasers? As for safety glasses, I searched eBay and managed to snag a pair of Univet 531-313 safety glasses for about $15, shipped! This should hopefully have me covered for my current lasers.

I've been lurking around here a bit and have been able to pick up tons of incredible information thanks to the other members. I'll probably continue to lurk more as I don't have as much to bring to the table at the moment and I'll try to avoid making a fool out of myself!

Thanks again and nice to meet you all,
