Hi, everyone I'm from Deep South Texas

I'm new to this forum and relatively new to lasers in general.

I have been doing some research and decided that for my first laser I would go with a 445-450nm 200mW or below (something really visible at night with some burning as well) so I can learn how to really handle a laser safely with something not so powerful. I would like to get some pointers on places to buy and advice to get me pointed in the right direction.

Thanks all in advance.

I recommend going with the single mode PL450B diode. It can go in the 200mW range. (check the link in my signature to see what it looks like.) You can get it here
But, if you were looking into buying one pre-built then I recommend getting one custom built here on the forum. We have some good builders here that could get you just what you're looking for.

Welcome to the forums King! :)

It's great you decided to purchase a *low-powered* laser as a safety precaution, but do make sure you get some safety goggles as well, since 200mW can easily cause damage.

Hi, Photonz and Greenlander I am looking for something pre-built since it's my first one. Do you know of someone that could build one for me? And I will definitely be buying safety goggles.

Hi KA956, welcome to LPF! You'd feel right at home especially with our Lone Star Group : HERE There's also the annual TEXLEM : HERE organised by fellow member hakzaw1!:)

Howdy! Welcome to the forum, King. The link to the the TX group can be found via the Community drop down --> Social Groups --> Lone Star Laser Fans or just click here: http://laserpointerforums.com/groups/lone-star-laser-fans/

Also, there is a TX LPF member map here: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zp9BV5baM2YM.kcU5k7-GJrMk

Have fun and be safe! Invest in some goggles and read up on proper safety techniques... there is a ton of info on LPF in pretty much every aspect of this hobby. Dig into the archives (search tool) and have a blast.

Cheers!

one great thing about meets is getting to try before you buy- the BEST place to start when looking for a laser is TX members ( I have 20 for sale) then other forum members- some get strapped for cash and give super deals (like me)
BTW it would be very fooish to own a 200mW 405 w/o eye ware its one on the most dangerous wavrelengths- looks dim but will burn a hole in your retina in less than 1/25 of a second
hak

OOPs sorry you asked about 450 not 405--my bad
450 is much brighter and thus looks as dangerous as it is- 405 is like a black-light on crack and crystal meth- its the diode from blu-ray burners.

It too needs to be used with care and eye protection
