Hi you guys I stumbled across this forum while on a quest for the perfect laser pointer to entertain my cat with. I'm still undecided on a laser pointer but I figured I would register and write this post. As a student in electrical engineering I hope to learn much more about different laser pointer builds while I'm here.

Anyone looking to talk about anything feel free to message me I don't bite (can't make promises about the cat though) . I like to spend my time in healthy eating, environmental consciousness, my job, exercise, hanging out with my cat, and reading.

Here's a picture of my cat we're about getting ready to sleep it's midnight here.

Well welcome JNJbabypowder to the forum. Enjoy and be safe always room for another laser fan.

Welcome to the LPF. Hope you are able to learn much while you are here. I doubt you'll get much information about lasers in engineering school. I didn't anyway. I did get interested in them when I saw a hologram called "The Kiss II" in the physics building in 1974. It got me interested in both lasers and holography. I got my first laser in the early 1980s when I culled a 632.8nm HeNe laser from a Pioneer Laser Disc. Made some great reflection holograms with it. :yh:

Welcome to LPF!

Edit: That's a handsome cat you've got there!

Do be sure and keep any "cat toy" laser to less than 5mW, and keep the laser away from their eyes. :yh:

Welcome, and yes that's a cute cat:)..Tuxedo? or in it's family?
Very important info on lasers being labled as 5mw..Not really true with ebay ones as they are usually very over spec and rated as 5mw do to the laws..
The ebay pen's with the 2 AAA's average any where from 20mw to 80mw.
I stick with the $1 button type battery's ones that are in all the dollar stores. They might not last long but the big trade off is your cat's safety:)
I usually buy 5 or 10 at a time as I can't break my cats habit of crying for it all day long..
There have been thread's of people complaining about the $1 ones run time. Which brings up a point if you want to build one that lasts, Axis sells 650nm 5mw modules that all you need to do is add a 3V power source to its wires. Some have test run these modules constant on for years straight!

Those are some great points, GSS. I have a 650nm laser pointer for about 8 years that runs on button batteries and it is definitely <5 mW in optical power. I just change out the batteries every few years and it is good for several more. Because its power is so low, I doubt it will fail in my lifetime. :yh:
