For the past couple days I have been using a green 5mw laser to polar align my star tracker and living a few miles away from a large international airport I only using it for a second or two at a time two times a night. Im extremely careful and scan the sky a couple times and use a airplane tracking map to see if their is any planes in that direction also. I live in southwestern USA. Is this illegal and should I keep doing this or not?

Welcome to the LPF. If you don't interfere with aircraft you should be okay. What wavelength is your laser? There aren't any direct diode lasers in green that output 5 watts. Must be a 532nm DPSS laser.
