Hi all
I am a father of four, teacher and amatuer astronomer. I am just barely getting started with the night sky. I had bought a cheap laser (not knowing anything about lasers) and switched it over to another host for my telescope. I didn't do the best job and i realized i needed a better and brighter laser with a constant on/off switch. So this lead me to hours of searching the internet and ultimately this forum to find the best fit. I am still searching for the best 100mw green laser under $60. Seems like everything else quality with constant on off is $100 or better. I definitely appeciate the wealth of info that is here. I did read the beginner stickies and hope if i do inadvertantly get off track someone will kindly help me. Glad to be here.☺

Welcome to the LPF, Michael. You are in a narrow budget for 100 mW green lasers. You won't get a direct diode 520nm laser at that power for <$60.00. Trying to get a DPSS 532nm laser at that power is hit or miss. Some sellers bin the 303 lasers by power for an added amount of money. You can buy them from many sellers for ~$5.00 each,
but it is a crap shoot. If you are willing to pay $20.00 for the same laser, you can get one from Laserpointerstores or Sanwu, but you would have just a much luck if you bought four of them from different sellers. The high output ones are ~80 mW which is close enough. You won't be able to see the difference between a 100 mW and an 80 mW.

Thanks Paul,
What if i expand my criteria to 50mw - 100mw green with constant on, and up to but not over $80. I have seen options from optotronics, no constant on under $100. Sanwu the same. Except for the 304 which is momentary and side switch. Pocket version is $90 minimum. Everything else (dragon laser, cni, z-bolt etc) are way out of my price range. Even build my own at survival laser looks to be around $100. But if i am wrong or have missed something or you know of some other options that would be greatly appreciated. Thnx

Welcome to LPF, Michael!

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your stay. :yh:

Welcome and enjoy the forum. Remember safety always comes first when using lasers.

Hello, Michael! Good luck on your search. I semi-started down the laser path with some 301 hosts - very similar to the 303's that Paul mentioned. They are more in the 50mw (I think I received one that was as much as 70mw) range - and for a constant-on, I use a cable cuff (link) to hold down the momentary switch, and use the key on the end for on/off. I see they are around $25 on ebay, they were going for $10 on Amazon not long ago.
Whatever route you take, remember that anything over 5mw can do permanent damage. I have kids and I treat my pointers like guns - lock them up and batteries are kept separate.
I was a kid once :) I somehow made it out alive!!

Welcome to the forum!

Hi Michael, sounds like we share many similar interest...I too am working on a green laser for one of my scopes..Think Ive got a decent one for the project, EXCEPT for the switch part....Do you frequent many of the Astronomy forums?? If so, im amazed at what those guys do in EAA Forums..
