I am a retired Technical Author in the UK Midlands. I became interested in lasers while working on high power IR lasers used for cutting and welding steel. I am currently looking to build a low power IR laser (around 300 mW) to see what it can do. I am aware of the necessary extra safety precautions special to invisible lasers.

Welcome, why 300 mw? Any particular IR wavelength? If you want to use for burning, or cutting, what material?

Welcome mj,
I believe that you can get IR diodes for cheap on ebay. There are tutorials for building drivers if you use the search button.

Stay safe, and enjoy your time here.

Welcome to the LPF, MJ. Is there a particular wavelength of IR you are interested in? The 808nm diodes are quite cheap as they are used to pump for v doubling 532nm greens. But, they aren't the only WL by far. The drivers for 808nm are also quite inexpensive. :D

If using a low power single mode laser diode at IR, the beam can be focused to a very tiny spot to produce a fairly high power density, might burn paper nicely, or mark materials with fine lines if scanning slow enough, but not too slow, of course.

808nm and 300 mW because they are cheap. Eventually I want to try UV. I am awaiting a diode from China.

Welcome to LPF, MJ! You should find that there are many nice and knowledgeable people here who are happy to listen and help. A good number have built, owned or are interested in IR lasers. Please feel free to question and share your laser builds and finds. We look forward to hearing more about you and are happy to include you in our collegial community of laser enthusiasts. Take Care. :D
