Hello,

I am a earth science graduate student in California. I used to dabble in lasers as a hobby, mainly pushing those cheap, unfiltered 532nm green DPSS pointers as far as they could go. My first introduction to lasers was from my high school's astronomy club. Our advising professor had a green laser and used it at star parties.

It's been several years and I'm starting to find time for hobbies once again and I want to get back into amateur astronomy and share the hobby with others. Naturally, this has pushed me back into looking at lasers once again. Just after a couple hours of research, I'm amazed how far the technology has come in 5 years, especially the accessibility of direct diode lasers. Granted, I don't know how accessible the technology was back when anything >20 dollars was way outside of my budget :)

Also, I am a big fan of free and open source technology, when it comes to communication. It's absolutely tragic how fb, redd*t, and the like have resulted in the declines of specialty forums. Web forums are where I grew up and I look forward to getting back into a forum culture.

I'll be in your care!

Welcome to the LPF. Yes, the technology has taken us far in just five years. There are many direct diode green lasers now.

Thank you for the kind words and for the reminder about safety goggles. I've been reading through some of the (horror) stories that people have linked and while I don't think I'll ever experiment with very powerful lasers (50 mW is plenty laser for me), having some goggles on hand is a priority for me before I get my hands on a diode. Thanks again!
