Green pointer broken?

Hi,

I've got my first green laser pointer (<30mW said the label) a week ago and I've been playing all around with it. It worked pretty good, but it just seemed that the batteries died a little bit too soon (3 days of playing with the laser for maximum of 1.5 hours/day continous pointing).

Anyway, in the last 2-3 days, it just seemed to have the batteries die after not more than 1 hour or so.

Now, my laser just died completely, when I push the button, I just see a red light (guessing ifra-red, actually?) deep inside the laser, but no green beam.

What could have happened? Is it dead?

See video. Filmed with my SE phone, crappy quality, but you getit.

Please tell me that you are NOT looking at that red light ? That IS IR light & can damage your eyes. Try a new set of batteries. The ones you're using MAY be dead...... rob

I've tried enough set of batteries and no, I'm not looking directly at the red light :-)

Well, thank GOD for that. Sounds like your diode did the LED DANCE OF DEATH though. If what you say is accurate, you probably overheated that poor diode & killed it you murderer you. LOL Pen lasers don't have very good heatsinking capabilities, so it just got too hot & croaked. I don't think I'm wrong, but others may have other opinions. Where did you buy it, & how much did it cost ???............rob

Just bought it from a local market in Romania, paid around $15 for it, including shipping. It was one of those green ones that came with a "lens" that projected some kind of dots when you rotated it.

Guess I'll be on the look for a new one.

Rayfoss has a couple of nice ones. They even have a pocket sized one about 4" long for $25.00USD......rob

dude your lasers dead, you cant fix it. sorry. the diode on it is fried. This happens when you over use it.

What you could do is try to return it... your probably out of their return policybut most of the time the shipping would cost more then the value of the laser, + you would receive it 3 weeks later. Most of the time its not worth it.

Never! Never look into the laser! the IR is the enemy of your eyesight! -Glenn

Yup, the diode could be fried. Although it is only 30 mW laser, it is only 25% of actual 808 nm diode output, so you probably have 100-120 mW diode in there. That generates a lot of heat, like any other high power diode does...

Well, I'm earing eye-glasses anyway :P

The only reason I asked is because I dropped it more than a few times, and I experienced a few times a huge dimming of the beam that caused me to see only the red light from the pointer.

Thanks for the tips :-)

So you totally abused it and are dumbfounded by its death?

Dropping it could result in crystals shifting, which means they are not alligned and cannot produce green light anymore.
You should be more careful, lasers are sensitive electronics and optics, you know!
