hi all.

i was wondering before i try doing anything pointless, is it really possible to use a simple 5mw green laser pointer and open it up and burn a resistor to boost the power? ( i dont really see how that would work...)

and is there in fact a way to mod a simple 5mw laser pointer to output some really high power?

buying 200mw + green laser pointers of ebay, do they reallly put out that power or its BS? :o

Depends on the brand. A cheap 5mw green off ebay with it's power turned up might only yield 10mw but a better one maybe 20mw. I have "heard" of a red one modded to go 5mw to 100mw, but they i would guess would quickly destroy the diode. If you want 150mw or more you have to DIY (dvd burner) or buy it.

I purchased a DIY red pointer from a member of the forums not too long ago. It came minus a resistor, and pumped out around 260mW..for about half a day's use (maybe 7 mins of actual runtime). He then sent me the same laser with an added resistor, and its been going strong for a week or so, but puts out around 120mW.

Its a trade off. If you remove the resistor from your green, I hope you already have a (higher powered) replacement in hand, because I doubt it will last you for the rest of the week..or day, possibly.

Bascially all ebay lasers apart from the 5mw ones are crap. If you want cheap, www.dealextreme.com sels greenies. Or you could do as these guys said, and make/buy a DVD laser, which will burn, though it is red.

If you want a high powered green laser for a low price, dealextreme.com is a good option.
But, if you want a really good one, get a Galileo and pot mod it. I got about 50mW out of mine. It could cut electrical tape and pop balloons no problem. With a lens i could light matches. They look, nice have good heatsinking and have a constant on/off switch for hands free operation. They cost about $80 but for 50+mW I think it's worth it. I think there might be a post somewhere out there about a Galileo outputting 60mW. And my Galileo had amazing 0.7mrad divergence...

Too bad I cooked it...
Just don't leave it on for 3 minutes in 100 degree weather.
That was the dumbest thing ever...
The constant on/off kinda makes it easy to forget the duty cycle when you're having so much fun...

Where do you get a galileo from?
