I used to tape my pointers in their tip with adhesive tape, that type you can find at any office (of course without touching any lens) to avoid the dust. One day I got a new translucent tape and turned on accidentally the low power laser pointer, I was amazed by the light scattering effect it produced. Dont try this with a laser >10mw. or you could melt the tape and stain the lens.
