hi, this is a pump diode out of an ebayser of about 5mw. i have made a video of it with a normal webcam (eyetoy actually ;D) so it has the ir filter i there still. it is running off 2 aa batteries. does this look like it's working properly, or do i have an overpowered led? what power level (average) would one of these diodes have?

If that is the diode itself, then it is NOT IR filtered ! The IR filter goes in place after the MCA, not on the diode itself - otherwise the laser would not work :-)

So - did it stop working, and you took it apart to find out why ? If that is the case, the diode appears to be working mostly, but either your MCA is shot, the alignment got out of whack, or your driver board is toast. Just from seeing that movie, it gives me very little to go on....post an expanded pic of all the stuff you have there - so I can see if it is apart, etc....

I think he means that the camera has the IR filter.  That should be putting out a bunch of IR from the LD.  Be careful.  Looking down the barrel of a gun isn't too smart.  Its hard to know what we or the camera are seeing here.

i can't really remember if it stopped working, wait, i think it stopped wprking but there still was a red light down the end of the barrel, but this is when i first got into lasers so i didn't know that the crystals could have been knocked out of place. i'll post some pics when i get home (at school ;)). oh and yes i was talking about the camera having an ir filter, do the eyetoy's have ir filters? What power output would be expected from this diode (estimate?)

i'm pretty sure it was 5mw? as i said it was an ebayser i don't exactly know the output?

i just pulled the ir diode out of my DX 20 and hooked it up to 2 AA's. i put a piece of electrical tape infront of it, and it started to smoke. But the only thing is that the electrical tape or whatever has to be right infront of the diode. i have tried putting some of the lenses out of the original laser in front, but it didn't work? how do you focus these things? also what kind of mw should this laser produce (approximately?)

You would turn the pot clockwise to increase power, counterclockwise to decrease power.

It's most likely that, but I have had one that was the opposite of that.

thanks for that ;). how do you focus these diodes, the output is more of a line than a dot and i can't seem to focus it??? :-?

Did you try cleaning the lens? A scratch on the lens can caause that too. But does the laser flicker at all? Cause It may be some weird mode switching, try cleaning the lens and if that doesn't work post a picture of the dot on here so we can help you figure it out.

here is the line output i was talking about. i can only burn stuff with this laser if it is basically right in front of the laser, but then i risk damaging the lens. i can't focus it for some reason?

should the output be a dot, or should it be a line like up there?^^^ oh, the blueish line is the laser, the red dot is from the camera

Output from a diode chip is an ellipse like that. You can stick a lens in front and get it roughly collimated though, or focus it into an MCA to get green output that's not so funky looking.
