Got my X-125, question for other owners thought.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

haha, good yet obvious advice...

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Dude it will not go through batteries THAT fast. Maybe a good half hour. Nova states you should be able to light a match from at least a foot, can you light a match at that distance? I really hope that nova kicks up the quality control, this will be the fourth rma'd nova in a month if there turns out to be a problem.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Theres no way I can light a match at a foot without exceeding the 100 second duty cycle. There really doesn't seem to be any heat output at over six inches. And yes I have tried various batteries with no change in performance. The dot is extremely bright even in day light, but the beam really isn't that bright indoors lights or no lights. I'm going to email nova tomorrow, maybe it was damaged during shipping. The laser is rate at 139.3 mW, average, from everything I've read a match should go up in a few seconds from a foot away. To be honest burning is kind of a secondary neat trick, I really wanted this little bugger for the optical aspect and I'm kind of disappointed with how dim the beam is. In a well lit room it is all but invisible. If it is function properly Nova's picture of a 45 mW in a lit room is one hell of a glory shot...

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

In a well lit room, the beam of my X105 is very bright. And this includes fluorescent lighting. I can light a non-sharpied safety match from a foot away instantly. I agree something isn't right with your laser.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

:'( Guess I'll be contacting Nova tomorrow...

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Hopefully they will sort things out, good luck :)

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

I think that what you're expecting is the beam will be like a green lightsaber, cutting the air with its amazing brightness like pictured in most company's photos. But what you have to remember is that most companies use beam visualizer of some kind to seriously enhance the visibility of their beams. In fact, Nova sells visualizer spray that does just this (image taken from their website):

Things are not always as they appear.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

The picture of the 5 mW with out the spray is what my 140 mW looks like with the lights on. This is with the total absents of sunlight, if a fluorescent light is on the beam becomes completely invisible, if a window is open and its day time the beam is completely invisible. I had no expectations of a light saber, I did expect that when I showed a friend we wouldn't have to kill the lights to see the beam.
Theres also the burning issue, it takes longer then the lasers duty cycle to cut a piece of electrical tape at less then six inches, and if you want to light a match you better be within three inches.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

I'd suggest you contact Nova about it immediately, then.

To give you an idea, this is 300mW in broad daylight:

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

i wonder whats going on recently..... :-?

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Thats roughly what my 125 looks like with a desk lamp on in the middle of the night. And again, its quite hard to get a match to go up at over six inches, and at a foot its effects on electrical tape are nominal at best.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

If it looks like that with the lights OFF, then it's definitely time to contact Novalasers.

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Don't they test them before shipping?

Or did the quality of CNI lasers drop lately? Do they have mode hopping problems?

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

It doesn't seem to be mode hopping.

So the beam has constant brightness, only that it seems too low and not powerfull enough? What's the divergence? Does the beam have the same diameter from all sides?

I would imagine, it would have to do more, than what you're describing..

I got a bad DealExtreme 200mW, but while it was in TEM00 it could light a match very fast or burn deep holes into a black floppy almost as fast as my ~200mW reds.. Once it split into two beams it lost quite a bit of it's brightness and all of it's burning power.

I thought these would be much better than that. Almost wanted to buy one..

These are from CNI, right?

Re: Got my X-125, question for other owners though

Ok I kinda feel like an idiot, but it wasn't totally my stupidity. I thought that just because I went out and bought a new pack of batteries that it meant the batteries would be fully operational, we know what happens when we assume... I did no buy a faulty X-125 but a faulty pack of copper-tops. My X-125 with some junk draw energizers is bright as can be regardless of the lighting, and I've managed to pop a red balloon at 8' in 20 seconds at six feet its almost instant. Match lighting depends greatly on the match, but a dark headed match goes up instantly at a foot. I sent Nova an email apology and Duracell an angry email, I'm hoping for some free batteries ;) . So just to clear everything up I am extremely happy with my X-125, and am no longer buying Duracells.
