Just like Gmail its by invite only at first, i just got mine invite the other day.. i been waiting a damn month already. does anyone else have this, or heard of it yet?

its a free phone # from Google. the one i have i picked out myself.. *its (801)-999-(last 4 digits of my current number) W00T!! :eg:

pretty cool service so far.. it has the option to premaban numbers. then when they call back it tells them *number is not in service & wont even ring on my side.. its pretty sweet.

So is there anyone else?

Yup, I've got one. It works really well on my Droid. I love how it transcribes voicemails. So cool!

So how does it work? do you ring your number then, ring out using their service?... btw its not untraceable!

Recieving calls get routed through your new number. So if someone calls your google number, that number redirects to your cellphone (and/or work, home, etc) without them knowing. I'm sure you can trace it somehow, but the average person can't do it, so w\e.

Outgoing calls do the same (you can disable this though, like I did). When you call someone, your phone actually calls your google number and then that google number redirects to the person you intended to call thus showing your google number on their caller ID.

EDIT: iPhone users don't get to do this... the application got rejected by the app store :P

Jailbroken iPhone users can take advantage of all of the main Google Voice features, there's an app called "GV Mobile +". Shame GV isn't available in the UK yet, though, I'm having my number ported at the moment and it's not exactly fun waiting...

Shoot, I need to get myself an invite. It seems really useful.

I may want to get a new phone for this service, what is the recommended carrier(s) and phone(s)? I would rather stay w/ Verizon btw, good coverage. -Glenn

DROID! Get the Droid! In my opinion it's a lot better than the iphone. It's what I have. Plus (besides the Droid eris) I think its the only phone with Android that is offered by Verizon.

I believe you can use Google Voice with any phone. If you want to dial out via GV number you'd need to dial the GV number first tho. the app for Android / jailbroken iPhone makes the dial out automated. and u can text using GV for free I believe.

When a call comes in to your GV number it fowards the call to your phone, so it shouldn't matter what carrier service you have.

There is a pretty sweet workaround to using GV and some other stuff to get free phone calls. here it is: Google Voice + Sipgate + MySipSwitch - Asterisk = Free Inbound/outbound Calling No Server required - SlickDeals.net Forums

thanks,
Kendall

So what exactly is the point of it?
Sorry for my ignorance but I don't really get it.

There's a little feature that came with my phone called Block Numbers that does the exact same thing without using someone elses services...

I saw this story a few days ago about using GV on Iphones

So far nobody i know has it yet..
they are still waiting on the invite from teh google.
i was thinking that when i chose my # that maybe i should have gotten one that was out of state.. maybe like got myself a florida number or something.

as for the service, i have been using it for over a month now and i haven't had any problems with it. i use GV a lot since i have been able to.
