Well I tried rubbing a few materials against the diode window and another couple alcohol 'Q-tippings' (70%) final one followed by some duster air to evaporate the alcohol.

The beam cleaned up fairly well and now it's metering around 240mW. I'm fairly pleased because I was only expecting 180-190 something. It's got the 405-G-1 lens in it so that's probably contributing significantly.

Thanks again for the suggestions gonna search around a bit as the cleaning question is probably a more common one

Yeah it cured my problem, these freakin diodes are to powerfull!

Stuff baking onto the windows has always been a potential problem. One of the things that melts, burns and sticks are 'flakes' from the plastic thread on the lens, especially in combination with the spring. I'd recommend going for a glass aixiz lens with its metal thread, and without the spring - nothing to make a mess there.
