Wow!  You are a lifesaver!  I have been looking around for a cheap solution to macro photography with a Nikon, and here it is!  Please post a link, if possible!  Would this work on any Nikon model (D40, D60, D90)?

By the way, while you are not ready to build a laser yet, you are doing the right thing by asking questions. Keep it up, and you will eventually figure it out. Also, the practice extracting a diode is great. If you don't want to extract the diode yourself, though, some members will extract and mount it in an Aixiz module for only a few dollars more (to cover the cost of the module). You can also order a preset current for your Flexdrive. This is what I did, and it has worked great for me.

This is the one I bought. (At least I think so. There are some others, but this is what drawed my attention (as the other nikon adapter doesnt have any reviews).

I dont know what models it fits on, but isn't all nikon same mount? (you also get for canon, and others). But remember, it requires a lot of light. Without an extra blitz it will be dificult. It might work with the standard flash if you redirect it with a peace of paper.
Also, when this adapter is connected, you have to use manual focus (of course), and manual blitz settings. I set mine at max (1/1). At the closeups you see here, I had the lens at 55mm, and the focus was almost at maximum, for as close as it gets. But its real fun to shoot pictures with this thing :)

One question here. This might fit bettter in the Red laser forum, but I already had a post hre about general questions =)

I want to make my first DIY laser. I was thinking of Bly-Ray, then IR.. But I guess I'm better off with a red laser as a start.

I want something powerfull, but I have no idea what diode to get. Where do I gind powerfull reds? I could go looking in the computer waste, for a sled of some sort.. But I wouldnt know what to look for. (I guess the power are very different on each sled) Or are there any places to buy them online, free shipping? Or at least just shipped by a letter for minimal cost.

So the higher the writing speed, the better the laser?
CD-Burners only got IR?
DVD-Burners got an IR and a red?
Blu-Ray got a BR and what?
Arent there any other factors to look at? If it's that "simple", then I might do some sled hunting first :)

yup it's that simple. just pick up a working drive. or you can just buy a 22x DVD-Burner because DVD-Burners are very cheap nowadays. you can get them for just $20+ USD.

Thanks for the information ;) I will check around for broken DVD-Burners... I guess I wont find too many Blu-Ray burners yet, but I will keep my eyes open :)
