That is a surprise.
For a ~2V forward voltage of IR, using 8.4V of battery will need a carefully designed driver IMO, 6.4 drops of voltage will generate much heat with some ACC buck driver

Yes, it heats quite a lot. Still it is a high powered DPSS, so higher voltage can allow you to use batts with higher internal resistance (lower current is needed).
