I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's some
kind of ballast material that was cast into
the shape of whatever it was ballasting.

That would make a really hard car seat. Lightning stalker is kind or on the right path for how it was made. Everybody on this website most likely has something made out of the same material the item in the picture is partially made of.

It's expanded polystyrene (EPS), same stuff foam rollers are made from.

I guess I should have been more specific, it certainly looks like EPS, but the only application I can guess would be the padding inside a helmet

It isn't any type of foam. It is metal.

@mariomaster I would guess it's a fusor with that nice purplish glow and round thick (maybe borosilicate) window
