Galvo speed clarification

Hey all,

I am starting to make my very first X-Y scanner, and have got myself a pair of galvos to do it with.
I wanted to confirm that I understand what the specs mean, so the input of those more experienced then me would be appreciated.

The galvos have these ratings:

20 degree optical deflection
>20KPPS

15 degree optical deflection
>22KPPS

10 degree optical deflection
>25KPPS

8 degree optical deflection
>30KPPS

5 degree optical deflection
>35KPPS

Would this mean that at the respective deflection angle and speed, this is the maximum speed I can drive them at without overshoot?

or is it best to stick to one consistant speed for everything?

The speeds are given are the minimum speeds they are capable for a given deflection angle. Depending on what's being projected, the galvos may be able to be pushed further. (faster).

However, push them too far, and you risk damaging the galvos and amps permanently. It's best to stick to these given speeds for that purpose, though.

Ordinarily when a set of specs for galvos are drawn up the rated speed is determined at an 8 deg scan angle so if a set of galvos is spec'd at 20k, it's because they're tuned using a test pattern so that the pattern looks best at 8 deg. If you increase the scan angle you should decrease the speed proportionally. Failure to do so results in comparatively distorted imagery and in the worst cases possibly damage to the galvos.

Yeah, those are the ones.

EDIT: for the speed, I was hoping to be able to do simple graphics without (or minimal) flicker, and maybe at the most, write short words (under 5 characters)
