Nice vid. On your "more power" part it looked like you strung them together in series? Did you also double the input voltage when you did that? You may have better results sticking the caps in parallel. It sure is fun to burn those pennies though! I once had someone ask if I could make one of my scorched/cratered pennies into a necklace for them.

hey pseudonomen137, for the second time, I connected them in series, then I charged one at a time so I has 60 volts. I just found the other capacitor so I will get 80 volts(its a different kind)

You should have seen it when I shorted 80 volts with the graphite from inside a yellow pencil :o :o

Once I burnt the pennies, I scrub them to remove the burnt marks, then you have a clean chip to death pennie ;D
 
The bolts on the capacitor are really old and weak. Its some kinda soft metal and it REALLY sparks when you take a screw driver across them!

I can get these capacitors for 3 dollars each at a mini computer/hardware shop at teh flea market. I might get 3 more or something. You don't need safety glasses if you do it in water, but if you don't use water, then its similar to fireworks blowing up in your face. :o
 
Back in the early 90's when I was only 19, I worked for a local computer company that got it's start doing mainframe consulting and development. (And then branched out into PC's and networking in the 80's…)

They would upgrade and buy used mainframe parts from other local companies who themselves were upgrading or phasing them out, and then toss out rack units of old IBM system 360's (5Mb hard disk = thing the size of a refrigerator… etc.) and leave them on their loading dock for a metals reclamation company to pick them up.

Some of the units had capacitors the size of COFFEE CANS in them. They were probably between five and ten Farads. (Not uF just F!)

I'm sort of sorry I didn't take a few out.

And I'm sort of glad I didn't at the same time. I might not be here to tell you about it. :D
 
wowowow that looks like fun! too bad i dont have a soldering iron, or many of those skills. i might get around to making one eventually
 
Well, you don't really need a soldering iron. If you choose to twist all wires together, be sure to put electrical tape around then cause twisting won't make a good connection and it could spark at the wire connections.


I just did a video of me discharging them with no water. its like fireworks :o

ya capacitors are really fun, but they can scare the crap outta you too! i had a masive capacitor once, it was about 30cm high, and about 20cm thick, that thing could blow the end off my little screwdriver, and a hugge shower of sparks fly everwhere. that capacitor didn't last to long with that kinda treatment, but it was fun while it lasted ;D

thanks. I say the most fun part is the regular sparking with no water.


but sculpting with the pennies is fun too. But you must have clean pennies. And if you try to add another penny and it falls off, you'll have to use another side of it cause the same side won't work. Trying to do it several times will make the penny sculpture look ugly. :P
 
How bad does it hurt if you shock yourself? i mean if you are melting pennies isnt ath a lil dangerous?
