I agree that it can surely be done. I doubt it will resemble this build after words. Maybe something like this will fit?

Not sure how to make something like this adjustable so you can replace parts and tweak but it whould be compact.


hmmm maybe a peg on each optic that goes to a ball joint + set screw in the block would be the adjustment piece. That or a bendable wire frame on each like Rog8811 did with the DX red-green pens.

Update:

I just ordered some custom made springs that should give more back pressure for the larger Green mounts. Once they have been tested and are given the OK I will send a set to everyone who has made orders so far and all kits going forward will use them.

I have only received feedback from jayrob where the green mount was moving on him ever so slightly. This is not known to be prevalent problem though I am making this change to be proactive.

The springs will be here at about the same time I get back from vacation on the 22nd.

I've got mine dialed in, and don't know if I will even use the new springs, but I sure would like to have them just in case! If I ever swap out another green module, I would probably want to trade the springs out as well...

Would it be posible to control/dim each of the colors with an external potentiometer between the laser en the power source, or would this break havoc of some sort? I would really love to have ha simple lab enclosure with three potentiometers covered by stylish buttons.

Yes, how you do that depends on what drivers your using. Should be easy in a lab setup. I have variable power on all three lasers in a hand held version(quite hard to stuff into enclosure)

The new springs here and I am trying them out now. I will send a set to everyone in a week or so after I have tested them.

Are you sending everyone who ever got a kit from you springs? I have noticed that my green likes to move depending on the angle the laser is, normally it's very close to alignment, but if I hold it upside down, it is rather far from alignment.

I've noticed that I get slight movement of green, but not because of the springs...

I finally figured out that it is temperature related. But I'm talking about very slight movement. That you probably wouldn't even notice at 30' distance.

I'm checking dot alignment at 70', and even as the green module warms up, the dot will move a little at that distance, and then go back when it cools... (also, with different ambient temperature of the room as well)

my green moves maybe 1/2 an inch at about 25 feet when I tilt the laser. The red and bluray stay in very close alignment though. I have the extra large green heatsink, that may make a difference.

Also, turn the adjustment screws as far in as they can go, and then back them out a little. That way you can adjust both directions.

But if it is already aligned, you may try turning each screw 1/2 turn clockwise until you know you have the adjustment as tight as you can get the springs, then re-align...

Not sure if you already did this, but if you did not, this may help you...

Hi Adcurtin,

The plan was to test them and send a set out to everyone when I know how they will act over time.

I have been making some experimental changes to my build at the same time that has set my testing back a bit.

a 1/2 inch movement just from tilting it makes me think that the mount is lose where it screws into the sled.

I think I can help. In any case I will send the new springs out anyway even without my testing being done.

Yep... something is a little loose. It could also be the module inside the heatsink.

I put two set screws on my super sized green heatsink/adjuster. Just to make sure the module would not move in there...

Looks great Jay!

Is that a focus ring on the output I see? Is that for a pinhole or did you actualy find a way to set the focus of the 3 lasers so they will focus together in the end?

I see you are also using multiple sets of batteries. I figured out a great way to insulate the mounts so that all 3 diodes can be powered by the same set. I use JB weld and some non stick surfaces to plate the green mounting washer in epoxy. I also epoxy the springs right to the washer for convenience. I measure 0 conductance from the heat sink to the sled and it is more durable than anything else I have tried.

For those that don't know. If you don't insolated the green mount from the sled you will short the positive case pin IR doide in the Greenie to the Negative case pin of the red if both are powered from the same source and your green IR diode will not fire. There are two options to making it all work. Either power the Green module seperately or insolate the mount so that the short doesn't exist when powered by the same batteries.
