My 60W diode driver consists of a 7 amp Powerstat variac, a microwave oven transformer with a rewound secondary, three 25A bridge rectifiers in parallel, seven huge capacitors (16,000uF each) and some other various bits of hardware. Due to the linear design it has pretty bad ripple but it does the job and the diode eats CD cases for breakfast
