90+mW 405nm blue-violet "blu-ray" laser

Never change a battery again! Never pull a battery out to recharge and lose it again! The self contained rechargeable Laser Box V3.1 just needs USB power (or any 5 volt source) to recharge. A status light indicates the charging status. Laser power is at full burning capacity all the way until the battery is drained and in need of recharge.

This laser now uses high power diodes running at 100mA (capable of higher) of current. The output power is adjustable to whatever you want if you like living on the edge. ;) Some people set these to 150mA or more. All you need is a volt meter to measure the mV across a resistor (which translates to mA draw) while turning an onboard pot. But be careful not to go too high! :o The output should be about 90mW+ according to DrLava's tests, or ~120mW+ according to Craig's specifically designed power meter. The output really stings & burns the skin in less than a second, even 30 feet away, and burns matches. (see below)

Don't mind the 100mA charging sticker in the picture above, it'll actually be 250mA. These are amazing even at 30 feet. You can still feel a sting & burn on the skin. The beam outside at night looks krazy. They're still available if anyone's interested.

Dr_Lava's graph was done without a lens.

The power before optics is 80mW at 90mA (just tested). After a clear acrylic lens it is 67-68mW. 65mW as it warms up, unless the heatsinking is very good.
650nm AR coated lenses can halve the output on the other hand. An AixiZ 650nm AR coated glass lens takes an additional 7-8mW away, compared to a clear acrylic. Especially due to the fact, that the glass one is made of three double sided AR coated lenses.. :( We need to get us some 405nm coated lenses soon! With those, the power should be >70mW at the same current. Maybe even 75mW.

Okay, that "clears" things up a bit. I am using the clear acrylic lens, but it's also "opened" up. So perhaps more mW is going through. What would you figure it's at with the opened lens? I hate not having a power meter for just this reason. I have to go by other's tests. But at least it burns none the less!! That's got to account for something. ;)

Well, i knew about the lenses before i actually measured it, so it was a relief to me, when it came close to 70mW at only 90mA. It's not really a bad thing, i was fearing it would be worse, which is why i originally "rated" my lasers so carefully - i started out with ">50mW at least", then i changed that to ">60mW at least" as i got more info on the lenses, so now i'm quite happy i got ~70mW, without pushing it.


My lens is opened up tho. It's a clear (no 650 AR coating) acrylic AixiZ lens with the back part pulled out, so the spring is pushing directly against the rim of the lens. So those numbers i gave are for an "open" lens.

I don't think i have any closed lenses anywhere, to measure the difference, but i think i read about it yesterday. Didn't really interest me that much, as i open them all up, so i don't remember how much it was. Not even sure it was a Blu Ray.



The burning is amazing tho, i agee! ;)

This thing stings my skin like a >170mW green laser, even when not collimated into a tiny spot.
Burning really wouldn't be affected much by a few mW, and the difference is not noticable visually either. I doubt 10mW more would burn much better. ~70mW of 405nm is amazing by itself. Only a few weeks ago i was considering buying a 6x BR writer, and now we have entire lasers for much less. :)


BTW, there have been occasions, where i regretted having a meter. Without it, i might have been more impressed by my >150mW (179mW peak) CNI. At least i wouldn't know it has a sharp drop after 35 seconds to 135mW.. :(

I just realized i made a mistake.. Dr_Lava's graph was done with a clear acrylic lens. This means your laser could be 80mW, it is definitelly 70mW or more, which is good news.


Unfortunately, it also means these diodes might be inconsistent. :( So it's hard to guess the power without measuring them.

I need to do more tests with the others i have... Maybe they'll be better. Luckily i ordered backup.



P.S. I apologize for the mistake. It's still not completely clear to me why i thought it was done without a lens. Maybe because Climbak's tests showed 80mW at 90mA without optics, at the beginning of that thread.

Is generation 2 burning portables? ;D heh, I so want one of those, it's just so awesome in so many ways: blu-ray, rechargeable, Li battery as a good power source, powerful, small, cheap , reviewd by the LED Museum guy, elegantly built.It's just awesome.Of course , my life sucks and I can't spare $160, but what'ya gonna do? :-/
I think WL is keeping the sonars just for show now, I doubt they're selling anything....
