Could the build above be modded to run an SST 90 for an even brighter 2D maglite?

Just got my drop in module from Jay and I must say... he continues to impress. I wanted to do this build as a DIY based on his thread and his step by step instructions are perfect. I would caution anyone who is thinking of building this yourself... save yourself the time and headache and just purchase the completed unit from Jay. It can be done but unless you have the charger, cells, and the ability to machine your host to your size cells you will be at the same amount of money had you just bought the complete unit. I had the charger and bought different cells from an online distributor and I would have been much smarter using his setup with the Feilong cells. They are shorter than what I bought and don't require near the modifications that I had to do.

With that being said.... OMG this thing is insane. It is actually painful to look anywhere near the beam. The battery monitor adds a very nice touch and gives it that over the top factor. I don't have any night shots yet... and I need to move my module around just a hair to get a good tight beam. I will post some more pics (night time and throw/flood) once I get time.

Thank you again for all your help and I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone who wants a very long lasting and bright light.

I'm still super impressed with Jay's maglite build, I bought the assembled unit last winter and it continues to kick ass. we were doing some dry camping this spring on crown forested land and a couple Forestry officers tried to sneak into our camp, dog started barking and I snapped it on high and pointed it down the trail thinking a bear or something....lit up two officers trying to shield their eyes. they spent 5 minutes checking out our camp, and 20 minutes talking about my flashlight. :evil:

Probably add to my list of buyer feedback. :)

I think what makes it, is it's long run time and durability...

Not over driving the emitter, it should last a life time with normal use.

I've done other Mag mods, including a 100 Watt Halogen Mag 623, some 9 Amp PT-54 builds, and my latest 5000 lumen HID Mag mod.

But this XM-L build is still my favorite. :D

It's because it's a serious 'user' build.

Made for long run time. Perfect size. Not over driving it, and still very bright at 1000 lumens. Plus having 3 modes, and of course the voltage monitor.

All features add up to the perfect combination! :cool:

I don't have one, but one of the Candle Power Forum buyers made some comparisons with a few of his lights, and I believe an Olite SR90 may have been included: (read his two posts here)

But as I mentioned above, this build is for durability and run time.

I could build an SST-90 Mag, but it would get warm fast, and not have near as much run time between charges. Unless we went with a much larger build for battery capacity...

That said, his comparisons are still very favorable for my XM-L build! :)

I need to go back to school on flashlights. Last time I was into lights, surefire was still teasing with 300 lumen lights.

Those are some extremely favorable comments. It does look like a super solid option. I was thinking of getting an sr90, that's why asked about it specifically, but it is a monster in terms of size.

The idiot inside me who likes stupid bright :p things is wondering now...

If this light were made with an sst90 obviously it would get hot fast, likely only a few minutes at a time on high. Is it within the realm of possibility to have it go down to a lower mode, say a medium that's equivalent to the high of this light? Also are the drivers you are using limited to 3 modes only? With let's say for the sake of fantasy, a 1600 lumen light, even medium would still be extremely, overpoweringly bright for most applications, and even low of 200-400 is not really low...

I plan to take several trips between august and October and a killer light is definitely on my "must have" list. Your lights seem to be phenomenal throwers (based on the reviews I just too a minute to read:)) which is also a must for me.

I use a couple of different driver choices on the single cell 'stubby' build, but the most popular 2 cell build with voltage monitor is using only the one driver choice at this time...

For sure you can get more throw. People get larger custom heads and reflectors, etc...

But as you can see from the feedback, this set up is plenty satisfactory... :)

by all means, I can't believe you aren't swamped with orders for them. the durability is impressive, I try not to be rough with it but it's dropped onto pavement, concrete, and ice more times than I care to remember and hasn't missed a beat. it's starting to look "seasoned"....I love it!

I received my 2 D maglight build the other day. What a incredible professional build! No one could ever guess this is a custom build. I will enjoy for years to come.

I got my XM-L Maglite build with rebel reflector and 2 Feilong cells yesterday. The first thing I noticed when I turn it on during the day is that it is incredibly bright and the throw is fantastic.

After seeing this I couldn't wait to take it out at night. I took it to the park and beach at 10pm (didn't want to irritate anyone with this extremely bright light).
IT IS AMAZING! It surpassed all my expectations. It lit up the beach for > 350m. I ran it on high for 20 minutes continuously and it didn't get more than warm. It lit up trees like it was day time. As for battery life, I was out in the park for over an hour and when I got home the batteries only measured 4.01 from 4.14 volts. A drop of 0.13 volts.

To sum it up, this light is an amazing all rounder with excellent brightness and throw and the best battery life I have come across.
