Or, and hear me out here, this is complicated stuff, we make a giant wheel, WITH PADDLES! Stick it in a nearby river, and voila! Water pushes the paddle and you get to grind your wheat. Oh crap, I think it's been done
It's not really a question of free energy, just energy being cheap enough for us to think of it as omnipresent and never an issue, in the same way that we don't think about running out of air.
Haha makes sense. In that case, if someone really did invent a device that generates energy out of nowhere, it would STILL not be free. All the research, development, materials, manufacturing machinery, hired workers, all to build a device that makes unlimited energy from that point on. And then we also have to take into consideration all the maintenance that it may require. Just about every thing you can own will break down and fall apart if not properly maintained.
