Member lazeerer posted a tutorial which involves adding a dot of vegetable glycerin to hot water over a stove and that produces alot of fog.
You can also buy a smoke machine for around 40 dollars.

Ditto, btw I got the fog machine at Bed Bath & Beyond ($25 shipped), and I found that, w/ Frog's Swamp Juice the fog is less choaky on the operator's lungs...

Fog machine. Put the fog machine behind a running fan.
Then it becomes a hazer, which disperses the fog evenly to make nice uniform beams. :beer:

Don't ever do this.
Very hot glycerol produces acrolein, which is a very nasty compound. To avoid this, put some glycerol in a spoon and heat it with a candle, and when it gets got, but not fuming on its own (that means the temperature is too high, yielding acrolein), blow into the liquid surface. It will produce A LOT of aerosol. Few full lung, slow blows are enough for a decent size room.
The aerosol produced is very dense and quite stable because it's hydroscopic.
Just don't overdo it because you'll end up with sticky surfaces in the room.
Carefully applied, it gives a stunning display with lasers. The room won't look like there's a fire in the house, and it disperses the beams like a charm.

I forgot to add something. Blowing in the hot glycerol produces fog only if the air blown is rich with water vapor. That's why using a straw and exhaled air gives lots of smoke.
Blowing regular air, using a fan or something similar, won't really do much good, unless maybe if the relative humidity of the room is exceptional... But I wouldn't use lasers in a humid room anyway.
Just be careful with the temperature. You really don't want to breathe acrolein vapors. Really.
