Focusable Lasers?

Does a laser have to be focusable to light a match?
I'm told many different things by many different people.
Accordingly, a laser can either be above 50mw and focusable or 200mw to burn stuff.

Assuming you are speaking of green (532nm), you are correct. 50mW should just be able to light a match if it's focusable.
And 200mW should be able to light a match without being focusable. (you may have to vary the distance)
Providing the divergence isn't horrifying :eek:

If you want something that will reliably light matches at various distances I would recommend getting something rated at at least 100 mW (preferably 200 mW or greater) with an adjustable focus.
 
With a red, there's really little reason not to get at least 200mW.
 
Depends on the power, but mW to mW, 405 is usually the best burner. Mainly because more stuff will absorb UV.
 
I know its from DX and most probably someone else may suggest a laser from o-like or rayfoss would be a better choice, but i can say the bluray dilda is a very good choice for your first burner.

It will actually be around half the power advertised, like ~90mW but still it burns a LOT better than my 200mW red, as qumefox mentioned 405nm is the best wavelenght for burning so u wont be disappointed at all.

I have mine since January and still is working nicely and havent had any problems with it, there is a review on my sig so feel free to check it out.

Just be SAFE and get some goggles for ur eyeballs, they are must-have for anything >5mW specially for burning.

There's really no reason for diode lasers to be 'under spec'. They aren't like dpss.

Also keep in mind that DX doesn't ship whole lasers over 5mW to the US. You don't mention where you are in the world.

In theory, you are 100% correct. In reality I have three diode lasers from o-like which has a much better rep than DX, and they are somewhat underspec.

I think what he is saying is that there is no excuse with a diode. If they advertise 200mW and the driver only puts out enough current for 100mW then it is just a bold face lie. Vs green lasers where many more factors come into play.

That makes more sense:)

Personally I'm also puzzled why the issue of on spec/undespec comes up with diode lasers at all.
