Sorry about that. My tablet would'nt let me upload the files. Here are a few photos I snapped off with my BB and Transformer camera. I'm not sure how much detail you can manage to pick out from these photos. But here you go. I have also attached a picture of the circuit I'm using.
I was just outside with this thing pointing it up at the clouds... I could pick the dot up on the clouds! When I checked the weather the celing was at 1188m! Over a kilometer! :) Not bad for an amature hack! :)

The housing I salvaged from a 5mW laserpointer flashlight combo. The one with the bendy neck for the LED. Some of the ones you can buy only have plastic housings... but there are ones with the metal housings around. The diode I pulled from the sled was wedged into it's large heat sink at a 45 degree angle, with a small metal wedge. I worked it free and noticed it's heat sink fins rested nicely on the slot at the back of the pipe. This should work for you too! The trick is getting a good contact I would think. The "shim" I used adds to it's heat dissipation I think.. and keeps it in place. I haven not run it much with out the computers heat sink for fear of toasting this one... it's my last working diode until I go on my next salvage run. Check out the links in Daguin's post above, I based my design on what I read on these forums and what I had available to me.
I am interested in seeing what you come up with!
