Hello all! I've just purchased all of the parts required for a nice 405nm laser.

I've got the eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices sled,

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices housing,

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices battery,

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices driver

"But quack, where is your host?"

Right here.

Though, I have some questions;

I'm really afraid of killing my diode, and want to know all precautions necessary to prevent me from damaging it in any way... This is my first build, as stated in title, and I'm really hoping I get it working properly. I HAVE measured out everything to make sure it'll all fit in the host, and it should.

Thank you very much for your help!

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

Not sure what you need help with, buy here are just a few considerations.
I assume you have a heatsink for the host right? The PHR-803t is probably best run at 125mA, so make sure not to overdrive it. Build a test load to test your driver's current. I bought that driver once, and every time I tried using it, the battery shorted out. So make sure you know the driver's proper operation before hooking it all up. IIRC, that driver's data sheet is not very clear at all, and someone even said it was incorrect!

Anyway, I hope the build goes smooth. If you need any help, feel free to PM me and I'll try my best to help!:beer:

EDIT: I noticed some of the pricing for your items. I just wanna recommend you buy from some reputable dealers here in the US (if you're from here). Modwerx.com and Cajunlasers.com are two really great sites where you can find laser parts on the cheap. Well... at least a lot cheaper than eBay :)

What parts in specific were expensive? I do agree, that the aixiz module was maybe a little more expensive than most, but you have to factor in shipping as well, which was free for everything I got!

True, when shipping is all said and done its not bad. But when you factor in shipping times, $1-$2 more to buy from an in country dealer is worth it. Not to mention you're helping them out to do what they love :)

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

Yeah, the anticipation is kind of killing me. At least the two most important parts are coming from the US. (the sled and the module) Hopefully I'd get them this week!

Careful though, the PHR's PCB around its pins can be a little tricky to remove. My advice for you is. Watch some videos on PHR harvesting and maybe read some threads as well. You can never be too informed when building a laser!

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

Believe me, I've been researching as much as possible. I've watched several videos on people putting PHR-803T laser diodes in modules and removing the PCB's and all that good stuff.

I'll probably watch them when I'm actually doing it myself!

It's refreshing to see a humble beginner for once. Most beginners I've seen have a false sense of "if they can do it, I can do it on my first try". But trust me, once you get that 405nm light shining out of that baby, you'll be hooked :) keep up the good practices of research and you'll be cranking out builds in no time! :wave:

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

I highly recommend watching Styropyro's video "How to make a violet burning laser".

But Mohrenberg's video is very good too!
So, +1 rep to Mohrenberg!

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

I've actually already watched Moh's version and styro's version of how to get the laser out.

Believe me, I'm not one to mess this up (intentionally) when it's such a delicate process. I want to do it right the first time. :)

Re: First build; PHR-803T Laser

SO, I got the aixiz module and sled today;

and boy, what a scare.

I took the diode out of the sled successfully, without any problems.

Plopped the diode into the aixiz module, and started to crank the vice slowly, when I hear a sickening *snap* below me.

My eyes wide and my body shaking in fear, I pull apart the vice...

And the back of the aixiz module broke.

Wat.

Thankfully, the diode made it out unscathed; however, the diode was in crooked...so, after a few carefully placed vice squeezes, I got the diode in the module straight and correctly.

Testing her out, she lases (at approx 83 mA), but I have one issue...

I can't get it to focus all the way!

I used a little nib thingie from a breadboard I had (terminal) and pushed the diode in a little more, so that there's a slight indent where the back of the diode is compared to the aixiz module.

Is that how far in the diode is supposed to be, or does it need to be further in?

Hrm. Okay.

I'm just waiting on my battery and my boost driver (so it can run off of one li-ion) and then I can start building it.

I also contacted the ebay seller about the broken module;

He's gonna send me a new one free of charge. :)

Yup the diode looks good. The phr-803t diode MUST be recessed into the module like that, otherwise it will be too far from the lens to fully focus to infinity.

First light!

Driver and Module! (not the finished product, I promise :) )

The actual diode output does NOT look like that; It's more of a dot with a bit of light around it. It focuses really well. I think the camera is just saturating from all dem photons. :P
