This is my first post on this forum.
This is, strictly speaking, my first build, though i'm confident with my soldering, electronics, and machining abilities.
I'd like to build a (relatively large, physically) red laser pointer, build in this case meaning assemble the diode into a heatsink/module and solder on a driver.
However, i have access to a lathe and want to make the pointer body myself, and then build the laser assembly into that. I could salvage a flashlight with one of those end-mounted click buttons and screw it on the end to act as the power switch.
I'm thinking of using a diode from a DVD burner, but the burner i disassembled (TS-H653) contained extremely small, flat looking diodes which would have been impossible to solder or mount, having leads around 1mm in length.
I want the diode to output between 70 and 120mW, what places would i be best off looking? assuming that i bought the diode separately instead of salvaging it. I've seen 100mW reds range from 10 to 100s of dollars, so i'm suspicious as to which sites to trust.
If i DO get the diode from a dvd burner, which devices would i be best off looking in. I know at least that most DVD PLAYERS do not have burner diodes installed.
My first plan would be to get an Aixis module, assemble, and then build the pointer body around that.
All other beginner tips, such as recommended batteries, will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for the assistance!
