First burning laser

If you're interested in building, there's two links in my signature which may help you.

The second one's pretty dense, so it's recommended you start with the first one to begin with.

That's certainly an option. But it's usually best, if your able to get the aperture end cap off, to put it on the inside of it, so its less likely to get scratched and doesn't look as bad as it would just glued to the outside.

How neccessary is an IR filter? What I mean is, is it a big deal if the laser I get doesn't have one?

It's not imperative. You just have to remember there's a fair amount of IR that you can't see, and the IR beam is a good bit larger than the green. Meaning if you happen to shine the beam near someone's head, even though the green's not hitting them, they could still be getting levels of IR that aren't eye safe.

And shiny things. You could catch a reflection back at you and never know it until it was too late.

Okay, is there anything else I need to worry about?

I plan on ordering this laser: www.rayfoss.com/productn.asp?ArticleID=36
and two pairs of these glasses: www.rayfoss.com/productn.asp?ArticleID=105

I emailed the customer service email address I found on rayfoss.com and asked if it was possible (or how hard it is) to modify this specific laser to add the IR filter, and asked if they could relabel it as a 5mW laser for getting through customs better. (I'm in the US)

Don't forget you need 18650 batteries and a charger for them as well if you don't have them already. The laser may come with a battery, you'll just have to ask. But I know it won't have a charger. Even though they sell one, I honestly wouldn't get anything cheaper than a ultrafire wf-139 charger. ($15 or so). The $5 on rayfoss's site looks an awful lot like the cheap charger that comes with the arctics that's giving people so many problems.

Here are the specs from the website:
Wavelengh 532nm
Power Output >100mW
Dot Shape Circle Dot
Divergence <1.5mrad at beam aperture
Beam Style CW
Circuit ACC
Working Voltage DC=3V
Working Current I<450mA
Duty Circle 90 seconds
Working Temperature +20dgC-30dgC
Storage Temperature -10dgC-40dgC
Power Supply 1pcs 18650 Li-battery
Size 30mmx165mm
Package Retail Box+Battery+Charger

The last few lines say it has an 18650 battery and comes with a charger. Is that the one you're saying isn't very good/reliable? And if I do need a better one, where can I find the Ultrafire charger you recommended for $15?

Ah. if it comes with it already, don't worry about it. Just keep it in mind if it craps out on you. Not saying it will, just saying there's a chance.

And lots of people carry wf-139's. Cheapest place would be ebay from some chinese seller offering free shipping. If your in no hurry, go this route. Will take about a month to get but sometimes they're down to $10 on price.

UltraFire WF-139 Charger for 14500 17670 18650 - eBay (item 320354723941 end time Sep-20-10 04:48:27 PDT)

is the cheapest I see atm.

If you want the best of the best though...

Buy Pila IBCT 4-stage Charger, AC Adapter | Pila BC01-AC01

The pila IBC is pretty much the fastest and safest 18650 charger on the market, but at $50, one of the most expensive. heh.

I'd rather not have to wait on a charger, so I'll see how it goes with the charger that comes with the laser.

P.S. I got a reply email back from rayfoss, here's the responses:
"I'm looking at buying this 100mW green laser from you, but I have some questions first.

First question is does this specific laser have an IR filter? It is not IR filtered. If not, can one be put on? Yes,we could add the IR filter lens per your actual request in charger free.

Second question is can it be relabeled as a <5mW laser so it will pass through customs?
Yes, we will do like this for international shipping. And you could find the true label at the bottom of box."

Sounds like your good to go then.

BTW, here's proof the IR is really there heh. Just took this. The goggles block 532 but they pass IR. the 'dot' is not visible to my eyes at all. Only the camera could see it.

Seriously, you don't need an IR filter for a 100mw green. If you're not staring at the dot from 1cm away, or pointing it at anyones face, you'll be fine. That thing about catching IR reflection in the mirror or of a shiny surface: you'd see the green beam on your face, if there is no visible beam on your face you're fine.
