Finally got my Hughes HeNe...

I probably will just leave it connected, at least for a nice long time. As long as I don't disconnect it from the power supply I don't need to worry do I?

Don't stress about it too much. NeNe's only supply about a milliamp at 1,000-2,000 volts. It certainly wouldn't do any damage although wouldn't feel pleasant. Just hook a bit of insulated wire up to the metal case of the power supply and touch it to the anode.

Wait- you have been tasered Bob?

Yup been tasered... Ohhhh schoolies!

Also built my own a while ago... Pretty cool project!

Impressive Bob :)
I can beat the arc though.... These are blowups I have had to deal with at work from the last 2 months (click the blue link).

I finally had a chance to try it out last night (crazy work schedule kept me too busy/tired before) and WOW! It puts any of my others to shame! Especially the other little hene I have. It's very bright!

now you need a greene. a green he ne. these operate at higher voltages tho generally

Everyone who is a fan of HeNe lasers needs a GrHeNe or two. Now if I could find a second PSU that'd power my bare tube I'd be happy.

Yeah, I'd like a green one, but most of the ones I've seen are too expensive for my budget, and they don't seem to be very common.

But who knows, maybe someday.

You can actually excite these tubes by coupling to a radio frequency generator if you can.

The greens are a little out of my price range too. Maybe one day I can get one!
