Feel the Heat. I need a mass advisory.

hehehe this thread is great, toaster I think you're going to get more worked up than helped today. or youll just listen to people helping and don't do what you don't wnat and do what you want.. instead of burning your house down :p

I am not saying I want 5 min runtimes. I never said that. Just for general purpose. Also I am not using a flex, you want to use boostdrives on BRs anyway.

ALSO diode are in a heatsink so how would I feel that? I can feel the heatsink. Running BR at 1 amp is death. SO why Would I go over 1 amp.

Engage brain before the typing

I hate to say this Toaster but a Flexdrive IS a boost driver. However, you're half right. You might not be able to use a Flexdrive with a 10x or a 12x BR as the Flexdrive may not be able to put out enough voltage. You will want a MicroBoost driver.

With a high power BR you should be okay without heatsinking the driver. You know this as you know you won't need to push it anywhere near maximum. The thermal shutdown would kick in anyway to let you know if you needed to modify anything but at the 500mA max that you'd need... Shouldn't be an issue. It is true though that most of the limits on duty cycle for the high end 445nm are down to the driver overheating and not the diode or host. That's why heatsinks for drivers have become popular recently; they work.

@ Lasers and Masers - I'm not sure what you mean by a more efficient heatsink than copper? Or how thermally isolating it from the host would improve things? I think this would make your life more difficult.

That's exactly it.. the "also" was signaling (a signal is a discrete part of a communication)
that it was nonsense in the fact that copper is a great heat conductor and also that people on L.P.F. do just fine in apparently other ways. :p

Oh, it was sarcasm then. I get it now. I though you were hoping for a diamond heatsink to pop up. Hehe. I mean the diamond isn't a problem I've got a huge one lying around here somewhere but I just can't cut it on my lathe!

I do somewhat agree on the copper angle though but it's more that it's thermal capacity is greater so therefore increases duty cycle by taking longer to reach it maximum temperature. Once there of course it's neither here nor there what the material is. I still prefer alluminium to work with and if I can effectively get the heat to the outside of the host, then I'm happy.

Morgan, BoostDrives, From Lava. I know what I am talking about here and I know I was right. There are Flexes and BoostDrives. Boosts can go up to 13 V, Flexes can only go up to 5.5v. Blu-rays like voltage, the BoostDrive is better because it has the ability. No to mention you don't need to go near 1A or 1.5A with Blus.

Both can boost voltage, but only Flexes can buck. The only time you would need to buck is if you were using a red, IR (DPSS), or 2x 3.7V's in series.

Any questions? :)

Any questions about my statement that I made. I asked for advise and Morgan gave me the numbers. This Thread is just spiraling off into a long series of pointless posts by people that either don't make sense or don't know what they are talking about.

The Original question was, "Does a 405 Need as much heat sinking as a 445." And the answer is a little less but close.

Actually your incorrect Toaster. The driver you mean to quote is more fondly called the, "MicroBoost", not a BoostDrive. Any driver that can boost the voltage is a boost drive. Being specific about the product you are talking about, then the tag you are looking for is the, "MicroBoost". It is true that it's complete title is, "Micro BoostDrive", but it is more commonly called the, "MicroBoost". Here is the link -

Don't just read the end of the link here. If you want to buy one, sell one, or tell people what you are using it is the, "MicroBoost". Similarly the, "FlexDrive", can be shortened to Flex but we, as a group, know the product well by its shortened name.

Are you now clear on what you thought you were talking about?

Dude they are the same thing. Lol Micro is a size. Micro flex and micro boost. They are Micro because they are small.
micro- definition - Dictionary - MSN Encarta

Micro FlexDrive
-Micro
FlexDrive

Micro BoostDrive
-Micro
BoostDrive

Just because you call it something else, doesn't mean that my entire point is wrong.

Notice the lack of space between Boost and Drive.

Just because of your higher post counts, it doesn't mean you are right by default.

It is like me calling a Red Fuji apple, a Fuji apple and then you telling me, that No I was wrong and that I wasn't talking about the same thing because it is called a Red Fuji.

Its the same thing, YOU are trolling ME. Lol

I am not giving in man.

Listen Toaster, you're either going to get with the program or you're going to quickly find yourself out in the cold. Whatever YOU think the contraction should be, WE call it the MicroBoost, look around and get it into your head. That's just the way it is. I'm not trolling you, in fact from the very start I've tried to help you but whatever I, or other people, point out to you, you seem to take objection to it. It has nothing to do with post count but everything to do with community. I even gave you some figures in this thread to try and help. Did you say thank you for that? I don't think you did, so pardon me if I say scr*w you. Use the language of the forum or get off. Not doing so will not help you or the forum.

@ Tikilaser - Silver you say? Now that'll go in my lathe!

Of course you can refer to the MicroBoost & FlexDrive anyway you wish but it will lead to others not knowing what you mean.
MicroBoost is just the commonly accepted term for the LPF community. I presume it became so since BoostDrive could be misinterpreted too easily. Some people would undoubtedly say boostdrive or boost drive. When reading MicroBoost is more distinct.

By the way, I think you & T_J should sit down for a nice chat sometime. (if you haven't already) Hes an easygoing bloke & I'd wager you would get along quite well. You should look him up.

I have noticed a disturbing trend:
-Any time Toaster asks for help it sounds like a demand
-Any input aside from the help he wants is dismissed immediately
-Others' thoughts, if different from his are quickly insulted
-Any answers pertinent to the posed questions but different from the answer he wants are dismissed AND insulted.
-Answers directly contributing to the posed problem and the ones he is looking for go unappreciated.
-He is also keen to prove a moot point for no discernible reason

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt but I would literally punch this guy in the face if he pulled ONE of those stunts around me. Rude is contagious and must be "nipped in the bud"

*I will wait for his -rep with bated breath*
Where is T_J when you need him? He's far more eloquent than I.

Tikilaser you have just been posting in my threads with pretty unrelated stuff. Like about the silver. IS that practical? Come on. Also in my Didoe thread, you told me I was stupid for using a BoostDrive in a 445 build. It's not stupid. Sure a flex would be better but there wasn't any around at the time.

Morgan, I am sorry if I didn't make a formal thank you. Thank you, Morgan. I appreciate your help. I do not appreciate you telling me my entire argument is false because you call it something else, even though I know you know what I am talking about.

HaloBlu "By the way, I think you & T_J should sit down for a nice chat sometime." Why? Do you think some guy I don't even know is going to scare me? He thinks he is some big badass that has done all the bad things and then he realized he was actually good inside. The good people are the ones that got the balls to say something by them selves; that can stand on their own to feet.

I have noticed a disturbing trend:
-Any time Toaster asks for help it sounds like a demand I never threaten you. I use question marks. Not statements (Demands)
-Any input aside from the help he wants is dismissed immediately That's because it is a thread on that topic. Not your poodles new hair cut
-Others' thoughts, if different from his are quickly insulted Other thoughts, you mean accusations and harrassment? Then yeah I do fight back, I am not weak spined
-Any answers pertinent to the posed questions but different from the answer he wants are dismissed AND insulted. If you have a bolt and you ask for a wrench, and he brings you a plasma cutter, you turn it down because you need the wrench. Just because I turn something down, it doesn't mean I insulted anyone.
-Answers directly contributing to the posed problem and the ones he is looking for go unappreciated. Sorry guys, I didn't know I needed to thank that often, I thought it was assumed. When I get answers, I try to say thanks.
-He is also keen to prove a moot point for no discernible reason. I never get mad unless a argument it directed at ME rather than the topic. Like Morgan getting his panties in a twist. He could have been like hey, we use the term "*****" instead. But, he had to direct it at me.

Everyone else. A lot of you are just making posts to jump on the band wagon and call me a bad guy. If thats the most helpful thing you can do on these forums, go right ahead. But if not, it doesn't help anyone. If you don't like me, then no one is making you post here, you are choosing to. I don't need to step on peoples toes here, but I am tired of everyone fighting. it's ridiculous. It's lasers for God's Sake. LASERs. It's not important. Have fun. Damn, don't make this a drama forum like you all seem to enjoy. And to all you with the ever so witty posts. I do NOT create the drama. You bring it and let it go wild.

I'm confused. You direct the comment to me here and I respond. How is that getting anything in a twist and how else was I supposed to reply to that?

You didn't know what you were talking about. You only thought you did. I tried to correct you but you still think you know better. Even when others tell you the same thing.

You get flappy when people do this for you and accuse them of derailing a thread or going off topic. This is doing what the forum does; correcting and educating when there is a need to. Like that time you thought a resistor had an anode and a cathode? What would have been the best thing there? To allow you to continue misnaming things? I don't think anyone would agree with that course of action.

When people do help you, rarely is there any thanks from you so I'm not sure you thank as often as you think you do. Please go find an unedited post where you do this. It's called courtesy and others do it without thinking. If you find fewer posts with thanks in than you thought you'd find then maybe you should do some of that thinking... And thanking.

M

Tired of me? You have 92 posts. Lol and I deleted it because you deleted yours, not the -rep.

Take a deep breath. Holy shit. And I am done with this thread.

Peace
