Hello, i bought a 9mm 445nm diode from DTR less then a week ago, it arrived today and i have hooked it up to my driver. it fired up no problem, BUT i notice this very LARGE square shaped projection. the laser dot is there, and then around it is this square thing..

is this a faulty diode? or am i missing something?

Looks like the die reflection. Pretty normal with high powered diodes.

oh.. okay, do all high powered dioes have them? will it cause problems in the future, and will it recude power output?

My M140 also has this. I would think it is nothing to really worry about (I'm no laser expert though). -HAM

all diodes I have dealt with have some type of artifact like that. it can actually help identify diodes, they're often unique patterns to particular diodes. best way to avoid them is by using 3 element lenses or sticking to DPSS lasers. with thoses there's no artifact, but then you have to deal with mode hopping. perfectly round dots are rare in the laser world

ah i see, well this is my first time ever using a G-2 lens, which i assume is single element?

all my previous diodes have been 3 element.
