Just FYI, of the three recent Imax 3D movies I've seen, Iron Man 3, Man of Steel, and Pacific Rim, the latter left by far the best impression.

Yes there are glaring lapses in logic you can drop a Jaeger through, but it's still the best Imax movie I've seen this year.

Oh yeah... fails...

*I'll try to keep it mostly spoiler free, but just in case you may want to skip over these fails below;

1. If you know where a monster comes out from, every time, why do you not target them there? A small yield nuke underwater seems like a better alternative vs having a city destroyed by a titanic battle.
2. Why mimic the failed great wall of china? Static defensive structures against mobile aggressors have a tendency to always fail as deterrents.
3. If the creatures are susceptible to massive damage physical... wouldn't helicopters, and boats, (drones) equipped with specially designed weapons be a far more logical option vs jaegers? A suicide drone with a bunker buster would be able to take out the creatures... quickly... with reduced collateral damage.
4. The creatures/invaders can maintain a telepathic link across dimensions/space? (If so, their adaptations to dealing with human defenses are terrible.)
5. Not nearly enough action with the other Jaegers. - Not so much a comment on plot holes as it is on the movie.
6. Why aren't all the jaegers equipped with operator suits that have an independent air supply?

Agreed, I've been waiting for over a year for Pacific Rim. Saw it opening night in 3d, wasn't disappointed :D

Actually if any movie is a fail this year so far, to me, it's Man of Steel.

I was really disappointed by it - I mean it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good enough to be worthy of the Superman legacy.

It just wasn't fun. Visually impressive? Yes. But that's about it.
 
It was a darker Nolanesque version. The Kryptonian tech was cool. It was grim, though I liked it better than Superman Returns. Although Spacey was a good Lex Luthor in my opinion.

Would you have preferred something purer like the original Christopher Reeves version?

Not really. I mean Superman Returns did try to stay very true to the original version... and I liked it more, but I'm not at all opposed to change.

I suppose what got to me was the absolute lack of humor, and rather poor character development.

I mean Lois & Clark fall in love instantly from him having saved her from an alien janitor/caretake robot by hitting her with his eye beams?

What does superman really get super strength from? The atmosphere or the sun? He is un supperized (is that a word) by breathing kryptonian atmosphere... and strength returns instantly without the sun?

The planet is literally falling apart, but instead of doing anything else the kryptonians decide "Hey, let's have an elaborate trial/sentencing ceremony, and save our worst criminals!" All the while having the means to actually evacuate plenty of people...

I mean are we seriously supposed to believe this super advanced race is that stupid/arrogant?

Why does he pick and choose who to save? Goes out of the way to save one pilot, but it's ok if the helicopter falls?

The suit just happened to be of the exact size needed for superman, on a ship that predated his arrival on earth?

There are a ton of inconsistencies, and I mean A TON.

Even with a Nolan "dark" approach, there is still some fun and humor to be had, as he's shown in Star Treck, or Batman... yet in MOS... nada, zip, zilch. Not only that, but the Batman legacy lends itself to be dark, gritty, realistic. The Superman universe... he's a nice guy, always ready to help with a smile.

I felt at times like I was watching a slanted documentary. Overall personal rating of MOS... Meh.

I can understand your point of view. I tend to be wowed by VFX and suspend my disbelief a lot. Even overlooking major issues, but it does tend to kill re-watchability. It can get oppressive when things are just too serious. That's one thing that PR did well. I loved Ron Perlman and the 2 Kaiju scientists :)

*Minor Spolier Alert.


I don't know why, but that moment when the baby kaiju ate Perlman, and the very ending.... hilarious.

Charlie Day... I have to say I'm also rather impressed with his acting... the scientists added a much needed comic release to the movie, and the relationship between Becket and Mako is actually believable.

That's what was missing from MOS... it was made to be gritty and realistic, but utterly unbelievable. I mean him not saving his father? A major :wtf: moment. How about him getting to be a part of a top secret military operation in Alaska?

Did he just happen to guess where Lois was being held for questioning while we're at it?

He KILLED Zod... superman killing? I mean he kills in other movies and cartoons, but only as a byproduct of his actions.

Also why the hell was he agonizing over one family in doing that, when you can only speculate how many thousands died as a result of his battle with Zod?

The bit with the Kaiju being able to fly into the upper atmosphere, to an altitude so high that atmospheric re-entry is problematic, and yet the Jaeger is able to land literally on it's feet... yeah, belief suspended for that sequence :D
 
I didn't stay for all the credits for Pacific Rim, a mistake. Something special happens, you can probably guess what it is ;)

MOS was very Angst-y (yeah I made that up) The thing with his father was supposed to represent his trust in his father wanting to keep his powers a secret, even if it meant his death. When Clark asks him if he should've just let those kids die and Costner is like "maybe" I thought that was pretty heavy. I actually felt Zod's motivation as over the top as he was, it made sense. Ok, not very believable if you break it down. I agree :)

I'm kind of Lowbrow and enjoy bad movies sometimes :whistle:

Angsty... going to borrow that one. I did stay for the end of the credits... I always try to stay for the end. Btw, NOTHING after MOS ends... another fail.

I'm all for people being able to protest, but if you're going to ruin someone's day, at least pick your targets, not random people trying to get to wherever they need to go.

Here's an idea... blockade city hall instead. Or the IRS building, or any of hundreds of possible locations, hampering which could earn sympathy, as opposed to annoying ordinary people which only garners animosity.

My brother has a friend who lives in Oakland. Oakland has a largely African American population. The friend is White. He said crowds of people are marching down the streets calling for people to march on Government buildings in protest behind the Travon Martin verdict. My brother's friend will be leaving town for a few days :eek:

Best of luck to him, and hope he stays safe.

I find it sadly ironic that in this "anti racism" fury, white and hispanic people are now being singled out, beaten, and attacked, solely on the basis of skin color.
 
That's a good way to put it Infinitus.

I was an idealist for a long time on this, but after some rather traumatic personal experiences I think there are some major cultural hurdles that will need to be overcome before things can really change. The mob mentality can be a scary thing. Reason and logic cease to be.
