Enchanted Beams Thread

Huh. Are there some hot springs there? With a name like cottage sauna it makes one think of one. Wouldn't surprise me to find there is some volcanic activity there. At any rate, great photos.

Unfortunately there is no hot springs or volcanic activity over here.. It's taken from our cabin sauna pier..

Yeah, the Canon DSLRs and most DSLRs have a hard time with the beam colour.
Even though they're accurate, they all (most) seen to have a difficult time rendering the beam accurately.
Ironically some smart phones are better at it than professional DSLRs.
I'm hoping that this Nikon B700 (not a DSLR) does a much better job on beam colour.

This photo was taken with a wide angle 16mm @f/3.5, 30 sec with ISO 3200 on a tripod using the Canon 5DII, no scope.

I have also noticed that my wifes Canon does that too but weirdly my Panasonic captures blue beams quite accurately.. How you managed to shoot with 30sec exposure time, I thought that would cause "trailing" effect for stars?

I really probably need to ask some astro shooting tips from you..

BTW.. I just accidently stumbled into Phase One XF camera site and I looked its specs and I came more curious about it. I almost fell down from the chair when I saw the price... :crackup:

OK, the reason there's not trails is because I used the "500 Rule"
It's how you can calculate the Max exposure time for a given Focal Length on a Full Frame sensor.
It's this:

500 Divided By the Focal Length of Your Lens = The Longest Exposure (in Seconds) Before Stars Start to “Trail”.

For a Crop Sensor you need to divide by the Crop Factor (Canon = 1.6)

So in my case (Full Frame Sensor) it's 500/16mm = 31 sec approx.
If I were to use a Canon Crop Sensor then:
500/16/1.6 = 19.5 sec approx.

I thought it would have more to do with the rotation of the earth. In 30 seconds, it just hasn't rotated enough. I'll bet if it was a 5 minute exposure you would need your tracking scope to keep it from blurring. But, hey....what do I know about photographing stars.

Thanks Arctic; I'm really enjoying it also. The shots do seem to be getting better. It's kinda nice to see your own improvement. And a special thanks to you for all your encouragement and advice. Still got a lot to learn but I'm on the path. :)

Was talking to the camera lady at Best Buy and she said that most camera won't go over a 15 second exposure time. You can use the hold-open button for more exposure time. Thought that was curious?

As for the 2W diode there is 462nm and has a real and brilliant blue color!
Is this also true for green and purple diodes?​

405nm is darker than other blue beams, as it should be.. :D :D
