Ebay 5mW?

I picked up an (advertised) 5mW pen style pointer on eBay and was surprised when I read the holographic sticker that says that the output is <50mW.

do you think that it is 50mW? I can see the beam very very faintly sometimes in a lit room, pretty easily in a dark room, and like you couldn't believe when its dark and foggy but that's to be expected right?

the thing that I notice is that if I hold it about an inch from my face and shine the dot on my lips I can feel a warm spot, its not hot but then I never leave it there for very long.

Any idea roughly how much power this thing is pumping out?

Thanks

^ Stop making any more experiments with the laser in your face, it´s dangerous!

Now for the laser, it might be 50mW, maybe even more than 50mW.

If you can feel the laser light on your skin it, I´m quite sure it´s more than 50mW.

For any more indoor lasering, you should buy a safety goggle first!

I had a feeling that was going to get me yelled at, I was being extremely careful to not have it pointed in the direction of my eyes.

anyhow, I wont be pointing it near my face again. I really wonder how strong this thing is, are there places that have things that can test it?

Thanks again

You can always buy a Laserpowermeter here on the forum.

Or the easy way, try to pop a balloon or inflame a match.

But you should be very careful without safety goggles (really wouldn´t recommend you that - also as I don´t know the real power of this pen).

Hello.

I have ordered about 10 pieces of the eBay violets 5mW, from 10 different sellers. ALL of them outputs between 55mW-95mW. So I think it's safe to say, yours is over 50mW.

I also got a 5mW eBay laser and at first thought it was alright, just a dim blue dot but that was with some used batteries. Got some new batteries and suddenly I can see a line without any fog maker or anything. This thing is clearly over 50mW. Check out some comparisons.

First with old batteries:

Then new batteries:

...you can see the line the laser makes in a well lit room in the picture, was not enhanced. Batteries are draining fast though.

And here is my like 8 year old 5mW green laser to compare.

that's awesome... can you feel any kind of heat if you put it on your hand or anything?

I can barely feel it on my palm, but I decided to try it on my lips (with my hand over my eyes, looking for safety glasses now) I can instantly feel the heat off of it.

can someone give me a link where u bought those overspecs? please? :3

As far as I can tell it is, the diode puts out a pretty decent dot but it is slightly oblong due to the diode. For 5.00 its well worth it

yep, i also not very long time ago bought one 5mw from ebay, and on mine is also writen <50 mw. Heh - try to burn some stuff using magnifying glas, to me works :) some black rubber starts smoking just as fast as with my 150mw blue laser :) it's really awesome, i think it's definetely more than 50 mw :)
