very interesting and a unique unit to a laser lover :D
they are very strong (powerful), aren't they (the dye lasers)?

The pump lasers usually are. You can achieve incredible powers with them (the PARSEC laser used to stimulate the atmosphere is a 13W+ 589nm dye laser pumped by 40W of 532nm.) You'd need an incredibly powerful argon or DPSS setup to pump that properly.

Well, there are three of them and they're not exactly tiny and aren't the most robust of devices.

Heh, shipping alone is $200. I'd love to play with one of these, but none of the lasers I have likely could sufficiently pump the thing.

That unit is probably about the size of, say, a toaster oven. Looks smaller in the pic, but it's also 3 heads + 1 circulator, so 4 total pieces.

Seems like you could get it shipped for less than $200. We ship hydraulic pumps (460v motor 119lbs) cheaper than 2 bills.

EDIT: 1,111 posts! I'll never see that again.

They're not supposed to, but ebay shipping padding is still pretty common :\ For an auction like that I'd say "Buyer pays actual shipping costs" and give an estimate.

I had a few of these and the threshold of a well used and abused one was about 300mw of multiline argon. You will need different dyes than R6G to drive it with 445nm though.
