Hi guys,
This is my second review. I'll try to do my best.
(If you want a short review, scroll it down)
I've been waiting for a long time to get this laser. I was really excited about it. It's a 50mW rated laser for a great price. Everything points to be a up to spec/overspec laser.
DealExtreme: $31.90 Focusable 50mW Green Laser Pointer with Safety Key Lock (1*18650 Included)
The price was $31,90 .
Shipping/Packaging
It took arround 38 days to arrive here in Brazil, due to the volcano problem. Also, DealExtreme took a long time to ship the item. There was a confusion: First, they said it wasn't in stock, and then a few days later, it was Shipped. I chosed the cheaper option (Registered Airmail). It came in the usual yellow bubble envelope.
I chose also the $0.1 service that helps my laser pass through customs.
The envelope was well closed. Due to the poor protection, the box was a bit damaged during the shipping.
Contents
Like any other chinese lasers, this box was as much ordinary as possible. Even though, it does what it's supposed to do.
A mini LED keychain came as a gift.
Inside the box there's the laser, the tailcap, a Ultrafire 18650 and the keys.
This is my first "real" laser, so I have never seen a 18650 before. This one was intact and almost fully charged (3.85v)
Host Appearence / Feel
The first thing I like about this laser is the safety key lock.
It works very well, and the key can be removed either in open or lock position. It comes with 2 keys.
I really liked this black host. It has what they call "anti-roll" device, what prevents the laser from slipping from your hands. It works. For that purpose, there's also a little strip (don't know how to call it)
The laser feels a lot heavier than the New-Wish style ones I've used. Since it's full aluminium, it provides a better heat spreading. The small button temporary switch is plastic but it's solid.
The head came sealed to prevent dust from going in.
There's also a part that can be removed to allow the usage of shorter batteries.
The size:
It's arround 15cm long and the diameter is 2cm.
Keylock detail
Extra pic:
I removed the focusing ring
Visibility/Output
As the other review say it gives what it promises. I can't really state that, since I don't have a LPM, but it's really bright. The beam can be seen daytime (not very well) and it's amazing during the night. (Much more than the pics show)
The dot (TEM00. No mode hopping):
Beamshots:
New Beamshots (more will be added)
Old Beamshots
Divergence
When focused to infinity ( minimum ) the divergence is 1mRad, what I think is a good value.
When focused to burn ( big dot) the divergence is 22,7mRad.
Burning
At first I couldn't burn anything, but then I learned how to focus.
It can burn matches, cut's duct tape (takes a while), pops balloons and everything else.
Here's a video.
Current Draw
My results were the same Mik got. This laser's driver draws 320 mA.
A word about duty cicle
Well I've run my laser uninterruptly for 5 minutes. In the beggining the laser was cold. After 5 min it's "not cold", but not warm or hot.
Ok, it might be bad contact between the heatsink and this part of the laser. I touched the whole laser inside, outsite, the battery, and everything was as cold as usual.
I assume, then, that the laser has a fairly long duty cicle.
It's a great laser for the price. Good for the ones who are starting. If you want a cheap laser, but not a poor quality one, this is the one.
Summary
Pros: - Nice Design
- Full Aluminium Host
- Anti-roll Host (grip)
- Security Key-Lock
- Easy to focus
- Can be enshortened and used with both 18650 and CR123A.
- Feels heavy and solid
- Bigger than pen-style
- Appearently good heatsinking
Power:
- Up to spec / Overspec (>50mW)
- Lights matches easily when focused
- Pops baloons
- Smokes black things
- Appearently long duty cicle
- 320mA
Beam and Dot
- Straight Beam
- Low Divergence
- TEM00
Cons: - It's not a branded laser.
- It has too much IR.
Thanks for reading.
When my tripod + clamp arrive I'll add more burning videos, beamshots, and divergence.
