Hey folks,

I have a LD from a slim 20xDVD burner from a laptop. The little guy is about half the size of a standard LD, maybe a touch smaller. Does anyone have any experience with these? I would assume that it can't handle the current of a standard LD, so I thought I would ask here for info before possibly killing it.

Cheers,

Zen

It's probably a 3mm can, instead a normal 5.6mm can, as usually used in laptop burners for space reasons.

But the power and current, it depend from the diode type ..... there is some user that already used them for build lasers, and someone also made an adapter for use them in a standard aixiz module (sorry, don't remember the names at the moment)

I was able to extract the LD from it's Al housing. It's a 3mm open can. The ribbon cable is still attached, going to have to be quick removing that tonight.

I picked up some Al LED flashlights (UV/White/Red Laser Pointer) to use as hosts, and took one of them apart last night. The LD was interesting (to me anyway) as it was just PCB sandwiched between 2 metal plates, then stuffed in an aixiz. So I took that apart too. The aixiz is threaded, with an acrylic lens, spring, and the 3mm can almost fits. The bottom of the OC is 1/4mm too long, and the aixiz is 1/4mm too big in dia.

There is enough room in the host to hold my smallest LM317 driver, and the batteries, so I just need to secure the new 3mm LD in the module. I've considered a tiny tiny drop of CA on the bottom, or just thermal paste. This build is just to waste some time before my order comes in from HTDz. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Z

the diode is going to die quick with no real heatsinking... The only possible solution would be thermal epoxy.. but it would be a major PITA keeping the diode aligned while it was curing. thermal grease is pointless for the same reason.. it won't hold the diode in place.
