Some 46yo idiot(not me) tried to smuggle 360 laser pointers into Sydney, from Shanghai, but got busted by Customs and now faces up to a $110, 000 fine and/or jail time.  I don't know any more than this as I just heard it on the Radio on the way home.

Hrm, dangerous hobby this is... might have to change my forum name to 'elbarto' to throw them off my trail....

1mW is the max level??? that is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. at least we can get 5mW lasers in the US.

Higher rated lasers are sold as 'parts only'. I can goto my local eletronics shop and pickup a 10mw green module for AUD$99 (OUCH). Or a 10mw red bare diode with lens for AUD$10. I'm sure there are other places, but anything in a "retail pointer format" (such as a green pointer from the same place) must be rated 1mw or lower....

hrm 803T@100ma hrm <1mw ? ahhaha.

You can still purchase parts for lasers, or mains powered modules anyway, neither are illegal.

Id be scared to have anything over 1mw in my pocket over there. When the gov sees a lack of respect to their stern laws, some poor bastard is gonna be made an example of. Definately not worth the risk. This is why I can appreciate the bluray, even at 150mw or more, it has to be the most inconspicuous of the bunch as far as visible lasers go. Green just attracts attention faster, with red no too far behind.

The man had not declared the lasers, which were subsequently seized and would be destroyed.

. . .after the customs agents and the investigators pocket the ones that they want . . . .for research purposes only you understand.

Peace,

wow, so even laser parts are illegal in Australia? no DIY's?
BluRay (the member) is doing a PHR GB and he's from Australia.

lets hope it wasnt him who got caught!
The only thing that got banned was handhelds, so those sleds are legal. If all laser products were illegal they would have to ban CD players, DVD players, blu-ray players, barcode scanners, etc.

I must not have read correctly then, I was in a hurry when I posted that. I thought the guy got in trouble for having lots of PHR sleds.
